About The Position

Provides occupational therapy consultation, evaluation and direct treatment services for pediatric patients; to function as a member of an interdisciplinary team and act as a resource to staff and the general public regarding assigned areas of responsibility. Functions independently to fulfill professional roles of occupational therapy clinical practice with regard to confidentiality of patient information, accurate and timely completion of patient evaluation and treatment, and appropriateness of communications with patients, families and interdisciplinary team.

Requirements

  • Graduate of an accredited occupational therapy program with a bachelor’s, master’s, or doctoral degree in occupational therapy.
  • 1 - 2 years of general experience required.
  • Ability to interact effectively with those contacted in the performance of required duties
  • Ability to communicate effectively and tactfully in both oral and written forms perform assigned duties in compliance with safety, health, and infection control standards, policies, and procedures utilizing universal precautions
  • Ability to interact effectively and sensitively with children of different age levels and cultural backgrounds and with their families
  • Ability to grade tasks and appropriate activities and problem-solve as situations arise
  • Proficient with necessary computer skills.
  • Current California Occupational Therapist licensure required.
  • Current BLS certification required.

Nice To Haves

  • 1 - 2 years of pediatric orthopedic, burns and/or rehabilitation experience preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Performs patient screening in: outpatient general, new patient, and specialty clinics related to community therapy needs and current services received to include frequency, duration, and appropriateness of therapy goals.
  • Performs comprehensive occupational therapy evaluation of each patient's physical status and ADL abilities to identify individual needs. Evaluation of the following may be included: ROM, sensation, muscle strength, balance, tone, coordination, fine motor, self-care, home/community skills, developmental sequencing/milestones, cognitive skills, visual-perceptual skills, transfers, w/c skills, prosthetic usage, scar management needs and equipment needs (adaptive, DME, seating, splints) as appropriate.
  • Utilizes evaluative findings and department Evaluation and Treatment Protocols to design an effective treatment plan that includes short and long term occupational therapy goals in consultation with patient, family and medical staff.
  • Designs and implements an occupational therapy treatment plan which addresses the short and long term goals of each patient in a timely manner and in compliance with department policy and standards of care.
  • Reviews treatment plan and patient’s progress weekly and makes appropriate modifications as required.
  • Participates in discharge planning to assure completion of patient and family education/training, coordination of community therapy program, if required, and evaluation of equipment needs which includes measuring and ordering products in conjunction with P.T. and scheduling delivery prior to discharge. Equipment items may include wheelchairs, pressure garments, bathing/toileting and other adaptive devices for ADL's.
  • Participates in interdisciplinary patient care planning presenting information regarding patient status including problems, progress with goals' achievement and recommendations for continued therapy in a clear, concise and understandable manner.
  • Communicates with community therapists, educators, other staff members and/or outside resources involved in the patient's care to act as a resource person and/or liaison with the interdisciplinary team and medical staff for patient evaluation, consultation, and/or other individualized needs.
  • Documents patient evaluation, goals, treatment plan, and progress accurately and within established timelines; utilizing appropriate forms/format per department policy and procedure.
  • Participates in the development and re-evaluation of department patient care programs/services through attendance at meetings as requested.
  • Reports departmental supply needs to responsible department member to assure timely requisition and purchase.
  • Participates in general department maintenance as scheduled and in compliance with department policies and procedures.
  • Completes department activity forms to document services provided, within established timelines and in compliance with department policy and procedure.
  • Checks that equipment used for patient treatment is safe, sanitary, and/or in proper working condition prior to patient.
  • Participates in the Occupational Therapy Clinical Education Program; assures patient treatment is medically indicated and takes into account safety of both patient and staff; and provides input for student manual revisions and general program changes to the Staff Development Coordinator annually or as required.
  • Supervises volunteers by overseeing activities, monitoring assignments for accuracy and completeness and ensuring that volunteer is in compliance with Volunteer Services and Occupational and Physical Therapy Volunteer Program, policies and procedures, and job description.
  • Participates in the review and revision of departmental protocols and standards of care for treatment of specialized patient groups and department policies and procedures within required timeframes as requested by the department manager.
  • Performs other duties as required and or requested.
