Job Summary: To evaluate and apply purposeful, goal directed, developmentally sequences activities to enhance the student’s potential for learning in the education setting. The performance of this job will be evaluated annually in accordance with the state law and the provisions of the agency’s policy on the evaluation of certified staff.

Requirements

  • Graduate Occupational Therapy Curriculum accredited jointly by the Council on Medical Education of the American Medical Association and the American Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA)
  • Hold a bachelor’s degree (Grandfathered prior to 2007) from an accredited college or university, otherwise successful completion of a Master’s degree required and Doctorate as of 2027.
  • Registration eligible by the National Board of Certification of Occupational Therapy.
  • New Jersey State School certification as Occupational Therapist.
  • A currently valid occupational therapist license issued by the New Jersey Occupational Therapy Advisory Council.
  • Required criminal history background check and proof of US citizenship or legal resident alien status.

Responsibilities

  • Serves as a resource and consultant to teachers and other school staff members in the realm of occupational therapy practice in the school system.
  • Provides ongoing assessment for all performance areas for those students referred through Child Study Team.
  • Screens students to determine level of performance.
  • Provides small group, individual, integrative and/or consultative services as indicated on the Individual Education Plan (IEP).
  • Provides a therapeutic program to meet the individual needs of any student deemed eligible for services through the evaluation process.
  • Assumes responsibility for service delivery in accordance with IEP and program considerations.
  • Provides information, support and counseling services to families when appropriate.
  • Assists with planning and implementing staff development/in-service education programs.
  • Collaborates with classroom teachers, parents/guardians and other school staff members to implement adaptive techniques/equipment which will enhance a child’s performance in the school environment.
  • Provides updated related objectives/goals to each student’s IEP.
  • Keeps ongoing records for the individual students who receive occupational therapy services.
  • Assumes responsibility for requisitioning and maintaining inventory for equipment and supplies, including adaptive equipment.
  • Provides progress updates via report cards, progress reports and parent/guardian conferences as needed.
  • Maintains students’ occupational therapy files, schedules and attendance records.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the Principal or his/her designee.
