About The Position

The Occupational Therapist plans and implements an IEP/IFSP based physical therapy program and activities providing direct service to students and indirect service to other service providers including parents and other caretakers. The role involves screening and evaluating children to determine needs for treatment, establishing a program of occupational therapy services in the child's individualized education program, and supervising services provided by occupational therapy students, assistants, or aides. The therapist also provides professional consultation and assistance to other service providers and caretakers, meets with parents to discuss extending activities from school to home, and observes and records changes in the child's response to therapy. Additional responsibilities include submitting Medicaid reimbursement documentation, maintaining caseload documentation, participating in staff meetings, and serving on the School IEP Team. The position requires adherence to professional standards and ethics, as well as compliance with equal employment and nondiscrimination policies.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university including or supplemented by successful completion of a course in occupational therapy accredited by the Committee on Allied Health Education and Accreditation of the American Medical Association.
  • Current Maryland license as an occupational therapist as defined by the Maryland State Board of Occupational Therapy Practice.
  • Working knowledge of the basic principles of occupational therapy and of human behavior norms and deficits.
  • Working knowledge of the application of occupational therapy principles and practices to children with disabilities, and laws and by-laws covering the education of students with disabilities.
  • Skills in oral and written communication.
  • Excellent human relations skills.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with students, peers, and parents.

Responsibilities

  • Screens and evaluates children to determine needs for treatment.
  • Establishes a program of occupational therapy services in the child's individualized education program identifying both annual goals and short-term objectives.
  • Supervises service provided by occupational therapy students, occupational therapy assistants or aides.
  • Provides professional consultation and assistance to other service providers and caretakers especially in the assistive/adaptive equipment that is used in the school setting.
  • Meets with parents to discuss extension of activities provided in the school to the home.
  • Observes response of child noting changes, and reports and records changes relevant to occupational therapy intervention.
  • Submits Medicaid reimbursement documentation.
  • Maintains caseload documentation including clinical notes and student attendance.
  • Observes accepted professional standards and ethics and safety procedures in providing occupational therapy services.
  • Participates in staff meetings and collaborates with other service providers.
  • Serves on School IEP Team.
  • Performs and promotes all activities in compliance with equal employment and nondiscrimination policies.
