About The Position

The Occupational Safety Specialist at UT Southwestern Medical Center is responsible for ensuring safety compliance at construction sites. This role involves inspecting work sites, issuing work permits for hazardous activities, conducting workplace injury investigations, and preparing technical reports. The specialist will also respond to emergencies and oversee small projects or inspection programs, with a strong emphasis on construction safety experience.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in a safety-related field strongly preferred.
  • Two years of directly related safety experience, or a Master's degree in a safety-related field with no experience.
  • Professional certification pertinent to specific safety specialty preferred, which may be considered in lieu of degree with four years of directly related safety experience.
  • Valid OSHA 30 certification is required; OSHA 10, OSHA 501, ASP, or CSP certifications are preferred.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with SSH, CSHO, SHEP course programs.
  • Advanced degrees may be considered in lieu of experience requirements.
  • Pertinent military experience may be considered for some of the required experience.

Responsibilities

  • Inspect all construction work sites and issue work permits for confined space entry, hotworks, trenching and excavation, and high work.
  • Conduct workplace injury investigations and develop technical reports to document incidents and recommend preventive measures.
  • Prepare for, respond to, and mitigate emergencies including fires, flooding, and hazardous materials incidents.
  • Oversee and manage small projects or inspection programs related to safety compliance.
  • Provide assistance and safety training to various departments as needed.
