The Occupational Health Nurse is responsible for the generally independent administration of occupational health activities for Abbott employees. This role applies in-depth knowledge of clinical occupational health nursing as well as knowledge of regulations impacting the work site, current legislation, environmental safety, and workforce health issues, and uses this to provide an individualized plan of care for a range of routine to complex occupational health assignments. The nurse serves as an expert in health promotion and disease prevention, working in partnership with appropriate people consistent with corporate culture, business objectives, and the needs of employee and community populations.

  • Administers the procedures of the occupational and environmental health and safety program consistent with the company's general policies concerning health services.
  • Assesses the health needs of employees and employee populations.
  • Performs all required medical surveillance activities.
  • Assesses and treats work-related illness and injuries.
  • Functions as a subject matter expert on case management performed including Worker’s Compensation without lost time, work-related and personal restrictions, referrals.
  • Applies detailed knowledge of regulations impacting work site and employee population to best address employee and workforce health issues.
  • Stays current on legislation and regulations that impact this environment.
  • Learns about employee population demographics and identifies key areas for education and intervention.
  • Implements timely, thorough programs and services that address these needs.
  • Dialogues with the employees to identify a suitable plan for intervention and/or resumed work activity.
  • Encourages employee to engage in the appropriate intervention and follow-up.
  • Tracks progress and provides continued support.
  • Develops and evaluates clinical procedures and practice guidelines.
  • Develops and provides opportunities for in-service education/staff development and continuing professional education.
  • Provides leadership, direction, and technical counsel to members of the Occupational Health team.
  • Defines, plans, and organizes projects to achieve favorable outcomes.
  • Collaborates with upper management to apply the common tools for managing the project scope, cost, schedule, and resources.
  • Participation in clinical research in Occupational Health.
  • Exposure to strategic planning process.
  • Case management courses.
  • Exposure to budgetary and operating expense procedures.
  • Bachelors Degree (± 16 years) in Nursing or an equivalent combination of education and work experience.
  • Registered Professional Nurse with current State license to practice.
  • Certification in Occupational Health Nursing (COHN-S).
  • 1+ years of Occupational Health nursing experience.
  • Detailed knowledge of Worker’s Compensation regulations.
  • Detailed knowledge of OSHA and other federal regulations that govern the workplace.
  • BLS/CPR certification.
  • Physical Assessment skills.
  • Phlebotomy skills.
  • CAOHC Certified.
  • Can perform audiometry testing.
  • NIOSH Trained - perform pulmonary function testing.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Strong written skills.
  • ERT experience.
  • Pre-employment nurse experience.
  • Certification in Case Management, CPR Instructor, Respiratory training, etc.
  • Production areas that are clean, well-lit and temperature-controlled.
