Requirements

  • Are a registered nurse who holds a current, unencumbered nursing license in the state of Louisiana.
  • Minimum of 2 years of clinical experience for sure.
  • Must have at least 3 years of experience in non-occupational nurse setting (hospital emergency room or comparable acute care setting)
  • Certification in Basic Life Support (CPR and AED) by the AHA
  • Must be available 24 hours a day, 7 days per week, on alternating weeks, to take first call for injuries/illnesses from first aiders and to consult about other work-related health issues as needed.

Nice To Haves

  • Occupational Nursing experience
  • Certification in audiometry (by CAOHC) and spirometry testing (by NIOSH-approved course)
  • Working knowledge of applicable OSHA regulations; Working knowledge of Worker’s Compensation Laws
  • Certification in Pre-Hospital Trauma Life Support
  • Certification in Occupational Health Nursing
  • Certification Breath Alcohol Technician and DOT Urine Specimen Collector
  • Strong communication skills and ability to build trust with employees
  • Comfortable presenting and speaking in front of groups
  • Solid clinical judgement and ability to make independent decisions

Responsibilities

  • Provide nursing diagnoses, specialized testing and evaluation of results, assessments of patients presenting symptoms of injury/illness in the on-site medical clinic as well as in plant emergency situations. Informs appropriate parties of patient’s condition and progress and maintains appropriate documentation.
  • Provide medical triage, judging severity, disposition, and referral.
  • Communicating with industrial hygiene, safety and management regarding perceived health problems related to workplace exposure and promotes the observance of good hygiene and safety practice in the performance of employees’ duties.
  • Reduces medical absenteeism by facilitating early return to work from STD and LTD. Monitors and manages early return to work, and limited duty assignments. Coordinates care and consult with RN colleagues, Corporate Medical, and Leave Management Team when warranted.
  • Evaluate, with the assistance of the site occupational provider employees returning to work after absences, injuries, illnesses, and surgeries. Reduces medical absenteeism by facilitating early return to work from STD and LTD. Monitors and manages early return to work, and limited duty assignments.
  • Communicate with STD, LTD, or FMLA verification and case management services; may assist with third party notification for STD, LTD, or FMLA case management or tracking.
  • Schedule exams and participate in pre-placement and other periodic examinations. Perform precision testing (e.g., spirometry, audiometry, breath alcohol, etc.) and other specialized services such as ear plug, respirator fit testing, and tympanography. Obtains urine specimens, including urine drug screens. Performs phlebotomies to obtain specimens for laboratory analysis.
  • Perform independently the following: Screenings, drug/alcohol testing, EKG, spirometry, audiology, wound care, vitals, and assessments.
  • Communicate clearly with employees regarding findings, care, fitness for duty, return to work expectations as appropriate.
  • Provides education to employees through one-on-one interactions and group settings (heat stress, hearing conservation, chemical exposures, etc.)
  • Participates in community outreach and helps educate local health care providers on our chemical emergency response guidelines.
  • Works closely with Environmental, Health and Services, Human Resources, Corporate Medical, and site leadership.
  • Takes a customer service approach with employees while still supporting BASF policies.
  • Supports wellness programs, screenings, and site and global health initiatives.
