About The Position

The Development Services & Permits Division facilitates safe and responsible development, construction, and occupancy of buildings and properties in our community. In 2023, the division issued over 57,000 permits with a construction value of $11.15B. In addition, the division conducted over 41,000 inspections and almost 85,000 plan reviews. We strive to provide prompt and courteous service to our customers, ensuring compliance with all applicable laws and regulations. Our goal is to promote public safety, protect the environment, and support economic growth through the issuance of permits and inspections. We are committed to transparency, accountability, and continuous improvement in all aspects of our operations. The Occupancy Coordinator provides support to managers, other employees, and customers in the permitting process. The Occupancy Coordinators handle a variety of tasks to ensure that all interactions between the organization and customers is positive and supportive.

Requirements

  • High school diploma
  • Minimum of 2 years' experience working in permits or other government agencies dealing with customers.
  • Ability to handle highly sensitive and confidential information at all times.
  • Ability to self-start; assume ownership in setting goals.
  • Requires strong knowledge using MS Office.
  • Utilize good time management skills and effectively prioritize and manage multiple tasks/initiatives.
  • Use good phone etiquette and effectively communicate with coworkers, vendors, public, industry and/or governmental representatives.
  • Read/comprehend written materials, write/record legible notes, keep up with changing policies and procedures and correctly complete required forms.

Nice To Haves

  • Associate degree
  • 4 years of experience in permits, engineering, construction, or other government offices working with customers.
  • Intermediate or higher-level knowledge of construction techniques or engineering design.
  • Bilingual- Spanish and/or Vietnamese.

Responsibilities

  • Generating reports, presentations and other documents as needed; scheduling and setting up for meetings and working with other offices to help customers close out their permits and projects.
  • Guide customers on completing all requirements to have Temporary and Permanent power released for their projects.
  • Answer phone calls and route callers to the appropriate office in the Permits Department to assist with their needs.
  • Use computers and software to generate reports, create presentations, conduct research, and assist customers with completing their needs in the Permits Department.
  • Maintain polite and professional communication via phone, e-mail, and mail.
  • Assist commercial customers with all requirements leading to obtaining their Certificate of Compliance for Harris County and assist them in coordinating with other offices needed to close out their permits.
