About The Position

The OB Surgical Tech/LPN plays an essential role in supporting the surgical team by serving as the primary scrub person, ensuring the proper handling of instruments, supplies, and equipment throughout surgical procedures. This role maintains strict adherence to sterile technique and remains continuously attentive to preserving the integrity of the sterile field. Working under the direct supervision of a Registered Nurse, the OB Surgical Tech/LPN provides compassionate, high-quality practical nursing care in accordance with established standards and best practices. Responsibilities include performing treatments and procedures within the scope of the New York State Nurse Practice Act, while consistently communicating timely and accurate updates to the RN regarding patient status, in alignment with hospital policies and regulatory requirements.

Requirements

  • Current BLS Certification (AHA)
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Graduate from an approved licensed practical school of nursing.
  • Current LPN license to practice in the State of New York.
  • Annual BLS certification required.
  • Successful completion of annual clinical, age and job specific competencies and skill verification tools required.
  • Excellent verbal, written, organizational and critical decision-making skills required.
  • Good interpersonal skills and ability to deal with all levels within the organization and community under varied conditions.

Responsibilities

  • Assists with patient assessments by collecting and reporting clinical data.
  • Observes and reports changes in patient condition promptly, maintaining confidentiality.
  • Documents care accurately and communicates effectively with the care team.
  • Promotes a safe environment by identifying and addressing patient safety risks.
  • Operates and maintains medical equipment per protocol and reports malfunctions.
  • Participates in surgical procedures: preps sterile fields, passes instruments, maintains asepsis, and ensures safety protocols are followed (e.g., sponge/sharps counts).
  • Assists with post-surgical duties including instrument care, dressing applications, and room stocking.
  • Orients new staff and students, contributes to unit goals, and supports shared governance.
  • Handles medications, sharps, and syringes within OR scope and guidelines.
  • Maintains at least 15 hours of Continuing Medical Education (CME) annually.
  • Provides age- and culturally-appropriate assessments, interprets clinical and lab data, and develops care plans and interventions within licensure scope.
  • Ensures staff consider age-related factors—such as hearing, vision, speech, and comprehension—when interacting with patients, families, and colleagues.
