About The Position

The Obstetrics (OB) Scrub Technologist uses sterile technique to prepare delivery rooms and perform a variety of technical activities including assistance with surgical procedures and vaginal deliveries in Labor and Delivery, as well as patient care and support activities, under the direction of a Registered Nurse (RN).

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Accredited Surgical Technologist program or school Certificate OR One (1) year of On-The-Job Surgical Technologist Training.
  • American Heart Association Basic Life Support (AHA BLS) Healthcare Provider Completion Card prior to start date and maintained.
  • Demonstrates an ability to perform all duties required for role in accordance with established procedures and completion of skills check list.
  • Demonstrates effective communication with other members of the healthcare team and promotes effective team functioning.
  • Ability to read, write, speak, and understand English and to perform basic math.
  • Reliable transportation with ability to respond from location within thirty (30) minutes of assigned Health First facility when on call.
  • Ability to be flexible and adaptable with daily schedule and assigned tasks.
  • Ability to respond appropriately to stressful or life-threatening situations.
  • Detail-oriented with ability for continuous concentration on an activity.
  • Excellent customer service skills with ability to interact effectively with medical staff and patient care teams.
  • Motivated to complete milestones and competencies with ability to receive constructive criticism and apply to future performance.
  • Ability to concentrate on multiple priority activities.

Nice To Haves

  • One (1) year of experience as a Surgical Technologist.
  • Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) prior to start date and maintained.

Responsibilities

  • Performs a variety of duties in an operating room or birthing room observing proper techniques to include preparing rooms with appropriate instruments, sutures, supplies and equipment.
  • Creates, maintains, and terminates sterile field for surgical and delivery procedures.
  • Properly handles and cares for all instruments and equipment. Checks materials and equipment for proper functioning and adequacy; reports faulty equipment and instruments per policy.
  • Adheres to the National Patient Safety Goals recommendations, Health First policy and procedures, Scope of Practice, AORN standards, and The Joint Commission recommendations.
  • Anticipates needs of the unit surgical team in the operating and birthing rooms; cooperates with the nurse in the individualized plan of care for each patient.
  • Shares responsibility of call coverage for the units' operating and birthing rooms, dependent on which area worked.
  • Participates in timely and effective room turn over, specific to facility by assisting with cleaning and organization of supplies.
  • Prepares and organizes supplies and materials for the needs of the patient, surgical procedure, and surgeon's preference in a cost-effective manner; rotates stock/supplies checking for expiration dates.
  • Displays a positive image and provides service to patients and families with sensitivity and respect for their needs, expectations, age, cultural and individual differences.
  • Contributes to the patient experience as evidenced by positive patient satisfaction scores and HCAHPs scores for department/medical center and/or written compliments by patients/others as well as consistent performance of purposeful hourly rounding and bedside shift report.
