The Staff Perfusionist is responsible for any perfusion services offered at UMC. He/she is responsible for maintaining all equipment used for perfusion services and will be supervised by the Chief Perfusionist.
Assembly of an extracorporeal circuit, consisting of sterile tubing, blood oxygenerators, blood heat exchangers, filters, collection reservoirs, hemoconcentrators, bubble traps, and temperature sensors.
Operate the heart-lung machine console, blood pumps, water heater/cooler, oxygen sensor, anesthetic gas vaporizer, continuous blood gas monitors, air bubbles sensors, and high/low levels sensors.
Perform Cardiopulmonary Bypass, Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO), Extracorporeal CO2 Removal (ECCO2R), Ventricular Assist (VAD), Vascular Shunting, Isolated limb perfusion, Total Body Washout, and Liver Transplant/Partial Bypass.
Perform Autologous Blood Recovery including cell recovery, hemoconcentration, and mediastinal collection/reinfusion.
Conduct laboratory procedures in compliance with established hospital policy for 'Point-of-Care' laboratory testing such as blood gas, electrolytes, hematocrit, activated clotting time, heparin/procaine titration assay, and serum glucose.
Assist with physiological monitoring including setup and calibration of transducers and monitors, aspiration and flushing of peripherally placed lines, establishing temperature and ECG monitoring.
Operate an Intra-Aortic Balloon Pump (IABP) including setup, balloon placement assistance, establishing triggering signals, filling the balloon with helium, setting the timing, and assisting with balloon removal.
Administer medication and blood components through an extracorporeal circuit as directed by a physician.
Employ myocardial preservation techniques including infusion of cardioplegia solution, setup and operation of topical cooling devices, and performing controlled re-perfusion.
Operate the Rapid Infusion System (RIS) device for infusion of large volumes during trauma and liver transplant surgery.
Demonstrate competency in technical skills specific to the Operating Room and clinical skills specific to age patients served.
Follow hospital-wide and department-specific policies and procedures.
Graduation from an accredited school of perfusion.
Certification by the American Board of Cardiovascular Perfusion.
Licensure by the State of Texas to perform clinical perfusion within 2 years from date of hire.
