About The Position

In a safe manner, monitor and inspect all plant equipment including gas turbines, generators, transformers, pumps, compressors, switchyard and related auxiliary equipment. Operate local controls and devices for proper plant operation. Perform moderately skilled work in the checking, inspecting, repair, maintenance, installation and construction of plant equipment and structures. Perform moderately technical and skilled work in conjunction with electrical systems, analysis, detection and repair of single loop control systems, electronic devices, communication systems and instruments such as meters, gauges, and regulators. Perform technical work in chemical analyses, industrial hygiene and environmental testing and calculations related to the operating efficiency of power plant equipment. Assist others in conducting tests, surveys and layout work. Communicate and coordinate activities affecting safe and efficient operation of plant in an often distracting and multitasking environment. AEP is seeking talented and motivated O&M Plant Technician to become an integral part of our team at Mattison Powerplant. This posting represents multiple positions that offer a range of opportunities for advancement. The minimum qualifications outlined below apply to the O & M Technician II level, with increased requirements for the O & M Technician I and O & M Technician Sr.

Requirements

  • Successful candidate will live within 1 hour of Mattison Power Plant located Tontitown, AR.
  • Must have a two-year Associate Degree in Electronics, or a minimum of 4 years of directly related experience in instrumentation and controls (I&C) in a power generation facility or maintaining large industrial equipment.
  • Must have performed the duties of, and maintained all the qualifications, certifications and licenses of Operation and Maintenance Technician III, or the equivalent, which is a total of 12 to 18 months of power plant experience in one of the following: operations, maintenance, electrical, instrumentation and controls in gas turbine systems.
  • Must meet all NERC and NERC-CIP requirements.
  • Must satisfactorily complete in such time as may be established by the Company all required training and job demonstrations and pass an examination as determined by the Company to advance to the Operations and Maintenance Technician I classification in order to remain eligible for continued employment.
  • Successful completion of the POSS/MASS Combo test (Plant Operator Selection System (POSS) and Power Plant Maintenance Selection System (MASS) is required for this position.
  • Operate, monitor, maintain and calibrate environmental and industrial hygiene equipment such as CEMS, noise and gas detection devices, etc. in compliance with applicable laws and regulations.
  • Direct and assist the work of assigned employees and contractors as required.
  • Conduct Job Safety Analysis, utilize Job Hazard Analysis, Material Safety Data Sheets, etc. and follow established plant and company guidelines in job briefings.
  • Obtain clearance permits and ensure that equipment is properly cleared and tagged before work begins in accordance with AEP Clearance Permit Procedure.
  • Obtain hot work and confined space permits in accordance with AEP policies to complete work safely.
  • Monitor plant equipment/personnel and take appropriate action in areas that hot work and confined space permits have been issued in accordance with AEP policies and procedures.
  • Respond to emergency situations, assist in maintaining plant security and maintain proficiency in incipient fire fighting, first aid and CPR.
  • Understand and adhere to all Spill Prevention Control and Countermeasure Plan and emergency response programs.
  • Proficiency in NERC and NERC-CIP Regulations.
  • Perform work as identified in the Managing Environmental, Safety and Health (MESH) process and document safety and health near misses, incidents and accidents and environmental hazards in accordance with AEP policies and procedures.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable local, state and federal laws and regulations and AEP policies, procedures, standards and specifications.
  • Attend and actively participate in environmental, safety and health, technical, business and leadership training and meetings.
  • Share knowledge trains and mentors other employees.
  • Report and correct any unsafe actions, conditions or near misses.
  • Responsible for exercising maximum care and good judgment in preventing accidents and protecting the safety and health of fellow workers.
  • Observe and comply with governmental and company environmental, safety and health regulations.
  • Demonstrate a strong work ethic, integrity and willingness to work and communicate effectively with all AEP employees and contractors.
  • Basic knowledge of applicable operating and maintenance instructions and procedures and ability to safely and efficiently operate the assigned equipment.
  • Must possess a basic knowledge of applicable operating and maintenance instructions and procedures and principles of operating the plant safely and efficiently during start-up, normal operation and shutdown of turbines, generators, compressors, exciters, transformers, etc. and their auxiliaries and accessories.
  • Must have the skills and knowledge of plant operations outside of the control room.
  • Basic knowledge and skills needed to analyze, interpret, calibrate and adjust plant instruments and controls, and be capable of detecting and making repairs to simple control systems and understand protective systems.
  • Must possess a basic knowledge of chemical tests, procedures, reagents, etc. to perform chemical analysis, industrial hygiene evaluations and environmental sampling.
  • A basic knowledge of minor plant maintenance, materials, practices, tools, rigging, scaffolding and blocking involved in the work.
  • Basic knowledge of mechanical precision tools and usage is required.
  • Must have the ability to direct and coordinate the work of employees and contractors.
  • Must be able to work flexible hours, shifts, overtime, on-call duties and limited vacation schedule as outlined by plant supervision.

Responsibilities

  • Perform equipment checks to ensure safe and efficient operations during the start-up, operation and shutdown of turbines, generators, exciters, transformers, switchyard and auxiliary equipment.
  • Operate valves, pumps, electrical disconnects, breakers and controls, etc. from remote locations as needed.
  • Take appropriate actions in the event of abnormal plant equipment conditions.
  • Monitor field controlling, indicating and recording devices, compares results with established standards and make adjustments as required based on operating conditions.
  • Enter and review data in the logbook.
  • Monitor and respond to alarms and unusual conditions to ensure proper operation of equipment within established standards and reports irregular and abnormal operating conditions to supervision.
  • Assist in monitoring, inspecting, installing, removing, testing, adjusting, calibrating, troubleshooting and repairing electrical, electronic, instrumentation and plant controls systems and components.
  • Conduct simple electrical system interlock and circuit breaker trip checks to determine proper operational performance.
  • Perform simple control system monitoring using a computer interface terminal.
  • Assist in using elementary, schematic, wiring and control diagrams to locate, troubleshoot and repair control systems involving electrical, electronic, mechanical, pneumatic or hydraulic components.
  • Use electrical and instrumentation test equipment to troubleshoot and calibrate plant equipment.
  • Operate, maintain and repair medium and low voltage circuit breakers and associated equipment.
  • Operate hoists, fork-lift trucks, small tractors, aerial lifts, scissor lifts, mobile and overhead cranes and automotive equipment and inspects scaffold and rigging in accordance with AEP policies and procedures.
  • Perform minor mechanical maintenance work including, dismantling, rebuilding, adjusting, aligning, packing and cleaning equipment.
  • Assist with repair of rotating equipment, valves, actuators, piping, etc.
  • Operate welding machine and gas torch to cut, heat, braze and make tack and temporary welds, etc.
  • Perform minor maintenance work on HVAC and plumbing systems.
  • Properly use machine shop equipment, power and hand tools.
  • Perform rough carpentry work and limited masonry work.
  • Load, unload, move and handle materials, supplies and equipment.
  • Perform predictive and preventive maintenance work by inspecting, monitoring, lubricating, troubleshooting and testing plant equipment to determine conditions such as wear, corrosion and deposits.
  • Perform inspections and corrective maintenance activities on plant equipment and components.
  • Conduct chemical tests and inspections to ensure proper operation of the plant.
  • Maintain tools, equipment and work areas in clean and orderly fashion.
  • Use work management systems to initiate, retrieve and update work orders, material requests, PM’s and time entry, etc.
  • Use various computer applications and software programs such as PI to extract data, analyze trends and report status to ensure plant reliability and efficiency.
  • Produce, revise and maintain records, technical reports, procedures and plant drawings as required.
  • Conducts investigations and makes calculations utilizing computer applications and programs, technical manuals and procedures, etc. to ensure reliable and efficient plant operations.
  • Assist in preparing required drawings/layouts on projects such as new construction, revisions to existing facilities and all types of power plant equipment.
