About The Position

WSP is seeking an experienced and highly motivated Senior Vice President, Traffic Engineer to join our team as the New York City Practice Lead of Traffic Engineering and ITS in our One Penn Plaza NYC office. Serving as the NYC Practice Lead the candidate will play a key leadership role in continuing the strengthening and expansion of our New York State Traffic Engineering and ITS practice. The candidate will promote collaboration and teamwork with a focus on contributing to a unified New York State Practice that will provide innovative solutions that enhance mobility and safety for our clients and our communities. Our ideal candidate has a proven track record of successfully delivering projects from initiation through construction, with a strong focus on client satisfaction and technical excellence. The ideal candidate is an experienced Traffic and ITS Engineer who is innovative, results-oriented, and team focused. The ideal candidate will bring in depth knowledge and proven hands-on technical experience to our practice. They will also provide leadership and technical skills to grow our backlog, oversee project delivery, and staff development, for our local, state and regional clients. This position will primarily support projects in New York and the greater Northeast Region. Some project-related travel may be required.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering with 15+ years of relevant post education experience in transportation projects.
  • Licensed Professional Engineer in the State of New York, or another state and able to obtain reciprocity in New York State within 6 months of hire.
  • Proven experience managing complex projects with budgets, schedules, and technical requirements.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead and motivate cross-functional teams, both internal and external.
  • Evidence of leadership qualities and ability to network with clients and others in the field.
  • Excellent written and oral communication, interpersonal, and presentation skills.
  • Ability to work effectively in a dynamic, fast-paced environment and manage multiple tasks under tight deadlines.
  • Strategic thinker with strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
  • Experience working on projects within New York, New Jersey, and/or the Northeast including familiarity with clients such as New York State Department of Transportation, Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, Metropolitan Transportation Authority, and New York City Department of Transportation.
  • Proven track record of upholding workplace safety and ability to abide by WSP’s health, safety and drug/alcohol and harassment policies.
  • Ability to work to meet schedules conducive to project-specific requirements that may extend beyond the typical workweek.
  • Occasional travel may be required depending on project-specific requirements.

Responsibilities

  • Provide leadership, strategic vision, oversight, mentoring and overall management of the NYC Traffic and ITS team.
  • Lead growth and development of the NYC Traffic Engineering and ITS team, including collaborating with Local Business Leaders and meeting with clients to develop and mine work, and strategically creating teaming opportunities with other consultants.
  • Coordinate with other WSP NYS Traffic Practice Leads and Regional Practice Leads throughout the country to support pursuits and workshare opportunities.
  • Collaborate with staff from a range of other disciplines including but not limited to: planning, environmental, civil, structural, geotechnical, and construction inspection to support a diverse range of projects.
  • Perform a range of marketing and business development activities, including gathering client intelligence, leading pursuits and proposals, and collaborating through professional organizations.
  • Provide technical leadership and manage tasks in traffic engineering with a technical understanding of: Macro, Meso and Micro traffic analysis, traffic impact studies, intersection design, traffic control devices, pedestrian and bicycle facilities, safety analysis, traffic calming, ITS design, signing and striping, temporary traffic control, and the MUTCD.
  • Lead and manage the lifecycle of transportation projects by aligning stakeholder requirements, mitigating risks, and maintaining rigorous quality control while monitoring metrics to ensure on-time delivery.
  • Lead and direct multi-disciplinary project teams, including internal staff, sub-consultants, contractors, and vendors. Foster a culture of trust, transparency, and accountability.
  • Manage outside vendors to identify, plan, negotiate contracts, deliver and monitor performance to client specifications.
  • Confidently present complex technical and project information to diverse audiences, including executives, client teams, clients, and at public forums.
  • Contribute to and lead the development of technical proposals, scopes of work, and budgeting for projected work.
  • Foster technical development and mentoring of staff.
  • Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds, resources and conduct, and adhere to WSP’s Code of Conduct and related policies and procedures.
  • Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.
