About The Position

The Nutrition Education Specialist for WIC (Women, Infant, and Children) is responsible for providing nutrition education and counseling to families, promoting breastfeeding, and ensuring the health and nutritional needs of participants are met. This role involves conducting assessments, developing educational materials, and collaborating with a multidisciplinary team to enhance service delivery. The specialist will also participate in disaster preparedness and response activities as needed.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in nutrition, food sciences, biology, dietetics, public health, health education or promotion, family and child development, or a related degree.
  • Or an associate degree in applied science, child development, dietetics, culinary arts, or a related field with at least two years of relevant nutrition experience in a clinical, public health or institutional setting.
  • Must have or be willing to be trained in specialized technical skills required to collect screening information and anthropometric measurements.
  • Ability to provide nutrition education, health promotion, and disease prevention education to clients.
  • Practical knowledge of the principles of adult learning.

Nice To Haves

  • One year of nutrition-related experience.
  • Certified Lactation Counselor (CLC).
  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of normal nutrition related to the maternal, infant, and child population.

Responsibilities

  • Provide WIC certifications including health history, anthropometrics, immunization screening, hemoglobin, evaluation of risk status, nutrition and health counseling, and prescription of WIC food package.
  • Develop, conduct, and evaluate group nutrition education for WIC participants.
  • Provide Level 1 and Level 2 counseling and support to new mothers.
  • Issue breast pumps to WIC certified breastfeeding participants according to policy.
  • Document individual nutrition follow-up for low risk referrals.
  • Monitor WIC contract and special formulas as assigned.
  • Assist with the maintenance and upkeep of nutrition education materials and resources.
  • Provide breastfeeding promotion and support activities as instructed.
  • Prepare and submit required reports and other duties as assigned.
  • Participate in disaster preparedness and response as outlined by the DPH regional/county plan.
