The Nutrition Assistant is responsible for obtaining and processing meal orders in a courteous and professional manner; ensuring diet prescription adherence, and maintaining an accurate dietary record for each patient. A day in the life of a Nutrition Assistant at Hackensack Meridian Health includes handling all patient/customer interactions in a courteous and professional manner, using standardized script where required. The assistant receives patient meal requests by phone call to the diet office, call backs from the diet office, or visitation at the patient bedside. They process meal orders via computer in an allotted time frame and order non-select meals for patients who cannot select a meal and for whom no order has been placed, as appropriate. The role requires communication with patients regarding menu selections in accordance with diet, food allergies, and food preferences, and the ability to verbalize diet-appropriate foods for all house diets. The assistant keeps accurate dietary records for patients in the computer as necessary, records unit pantry refrigerator temperature daily, and monitors pantries for general cleanliness. They ensure all menu choices made by patients are therapeutically accurate and process orders for guest trays in a courteous and timely manner. The assistant communicates special requests and important information to appropriate staff in a timely manner, prints reports timely, and processes requests for nourishments. They identify the needs of the patient population served and modify and deliver care that is specific to those needs. Other duties and/or projects may be assigned, and adherence to HMH Organizational competencies and standards of behavior is required.
