About The Position

The Nursing Unit Manager is responsible for overseeing staff education, evaluations, disciplines, and HR management; acts as the medical records management system champion; and supervising nursing personnel on multiple units to deliver nursing care within scope of practice, coordinating care delivery, ensuring residents' needs are met in accordance with professional standards of practice through physician orders, community policies and procedures, and federal, state and local guidelines.

Requirements

  • Associate's Degree (two year college or technical school) in Nursing.
  • 1 plus years of experience in a nursing role.
  • Must be able to proficiently operate a computer, the Internet, Microsoft Office, and other relevant software programs.
  • Active nursing license conferred by the state Board of Nursing.
  • Must obtain and maintain mandatory, state and federal requirements and certifications for practice or occupation.
  • Must be CPR certified.

Responsibilities

  • Oversees staff development, including the training and education of nursing staff.
  • Ensures competencies for STNAs (including catheter, medpath, dressing changes, etc.).
  • Conducts monthly STNA meetings, discussing any new issues, training, resident concerns, etc.
  • Completes daily audits of electronic medical records, including follow-up with employees to ensure accuracy.
  • Completes audits of the electronic medication program.
  • Liaises with corporate office regarding electronic medical records, troubleshooting as necessary.
  • Assists Director, Nursing as necessary.
  • Makes rounds with doctor and nurse practitioner weekly.
  • Oversees restorative care program.
  • Conducts interviews for new hires.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of location and use of Nursing Policy and Procedure Manual.
  • Reviews employee call-off's, calls in off-duty employees or adjusts assignment sheet to adequately cover staffing.
  • Participates in directing, and assigning nursing staff.
  • Communicates appropriate information to team members, physicians, families and supervisor.
  • Assigns resident care responsibilities and supervises subordinates on scheduled shift.
  • Disciplines subordinates with verbal/written warnings, or suspends subject to discharge, pending investigation.
  • Staffs the department with capable people.
  • Plans the work for employees with due regard for performance and skills.
  • Ensures employees are adequately oriented and trained to perform their duties.
  • Assists and encourages employees to understand where/how their role impacts the community and corporation.
  • Sets meaningful individual objectives and specific job expectations.
  • Ensures employees know what is expected and the standards by which they will be evaluated.
  • Gives adequate guidance and supervision and periodically reviews employee performance.
  • Recommends promotions and pay for employees as merited, recognizing and rewarding initiative, imagination and work well done.
  • Creates an environment encouraging excellence and sets a good example.
  • Gives employees sufficient authority to make the necessary decisions to carry out their assignments.
  • Coaches/counsels/disciplines personnel as necessary.
  • Establishes and maintains effective communication regarding performance, both with employees and leadership.
  • Properly manages employees; personnel information.
  • Provides employees with training and instructions on safe work practices and regularly reviews work activities, materials and facilities to eliminate potential hazards.
  • Identifies and maintains accountability for security within assigned areas of responsibility.
  • Ensures employees understand their obligations to protect company and employee property.
  • Takes appropriate action when security infractions occur.

  • Receives, investigates and responds to employee grievances.

  • Oversees the proper execution of various medical procedures and assessments.
  • Supervises and assists with meal service, as necessary.
  • Consults with dietician regarding any special dietary needs and follows through on dietary recommendations.
  • Documents medications, treatments, and prn's according to policy.
  • Completes medical forms, reports, evaluations, studies, charting, etc., as necessary.
  • Participates in care conferences as deemed necessary.
  • Oversees the admission and discharge processes.
  • Ensures staff delivers quality care and service, according to UCH policies and procedures.
