About The Position

The Nursing Technician position at the University of Illinois Hospital & Health Sciences System (UI Health) involves delivering patient care under the supervision of a Registered Nurse (RN) or Licensed Practical Nurse II (LPN). The role utilizes the Relationship-Based Care model to improve patient outcomes and support nursing excellence in clinical practice. The Nursing Technician will engage in therapeutic relationships with patients, families, and colleagues, functioning as an interdisciplinary team member to fulfill unit and organizational goals.

Requirements

  • High school graduation or equivalent.
  • Possession of a CNA license from an accredited institution/school/program.
  • Registered and active in the Illinois Department of Public Health - Health Care Work Registry.
  • Current AHA BLS/CPR and other required unit specific certifications.
  • Effective communication skills (oral and written) to facilitate therapeutic relationships between patients, family, and health care providers.
  • Intermediate computer skills with the ability to become proficient in the Electronic Health Record (EHR) with on-the-job training.
  • Excellent attendance, interpersonal skills, and work history.

Responsibilities

  • Administer or assist with basic personal hygiene for patient comfort and cleanliness, including bathing, toileting, and feeding.
  • Carry out or assist with specific therapeutic procedures such as colostomy care, observing IV flow rates, and applying heat and cold to patients.
  • Assist with diagnostic procedures including taking temperature and blood pressure, collecting urine and stool specimens, and assisting physicians with physical examinations.
  • Administer to the physical needs of patients by providing support, feeding, positioning, and adjusting side rails and restraints.
  • Maintain a suitable environment for patients by changing linens, tidying the premises, and caring for equipment according to nursing orders.
  • Chart and report nursing care activities and observations.
  • Assist in the care of acutely ill patients by performing designated technical aspects of nursing care.
  • Participate in special projects as assigned.
