About The Position

Monroe Community Mental Health Authority is a community based mental health service organization dedicated to consumers living in Monroe County. We provide individual health services for people with any type of behavioral health concerns such as substance abuse, emotional issues, and intellectual and developmental disabilities. Our mission is to enrich lives and promote wellness. We live out that mission by being an inviting resource that offers in-house, referral, and emergency services, as well as support within the community for those in need. Under general supervision of the Medical Director, the Nursing Supervisor is responsible for directing the work activities of the nursing staff and support personnel in providing clinical care. The Nursing Supervisor will also be called upon to perform nursing care, interacting with consumers as a registered nurse.

Requirements

  • Registered Nurse from an accredited nursing program or B.S.N./M.S.N with requisite licensure by the State of Michigan.
  • Experience with multi-disciplinary treatment teams required.
  • Computer skills including prior experience using an electronic medical record system required.
  • Ability to work with a wide variety of professional staff and other agencies in an outcome data based manner is an integral part of the job responsibilities.
  • Must have at least 3 years of clinical nursing experience, with preference given to working in a psychiatric setting.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the clinical needs, symptoms, and behaviors of individuals served.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and skills necessary to provide the appropriate care for their clinical needs.
  • Knowledge of general nursing principles and practices.
  • Knowledge of medications and treatments.
  • Knowledge of scientific principles and specialized techniques used in the practice of nursing.
  • Knowledge of current literature in the field of psychiatric nursing.
  • Knowledge of training and supervisory techniques.
  • Ability to assess the effectiveness of nursing care.
  • Eagerness to learn and to teach.
  • Ability to work in a complex, detail-oriented, deadline structured busy organization.
  • The following physical and mental abilities are required: frequent lifting or carrying up to 15 pounds, must be able to hear, frequent standing/walking going up and down stairs due to community outreach basis, ability to communicate effectively in person and/or phone, the ability to read, analyze and interpret information, ability to write reports, correspondence and procedures, ability to maintain consumer charts/records, ability to remain impartial during investigative procedures, ability to define and solve practical problems, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions, ability to influence others, and the ability to conduct patient assessments and treatment.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in MS Outlook, Word and such other applications if/when required.
  • Ability to be trained and successfully complete other computer training as required.
  • Valid driver’s license, proof of current automobile insurance and driving record determined by the Authority’s insurance carrier to be eligible for coverage if required as part of positions duties.

Nice To Haves

  • Experienced in reviewing and analyzing electronic data preferred.
  • Prior work experience supervising nursing staff preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Under the general supervision of the Medical Director, direct and assist in managing the daily activities of Nursing Staff within the constraints of the department’s budget.
  • Coordinate activities by scheduling work assignments, setting priorities, and directing the work of nursing staff.
  • Supervise and participates in the provision of general nursing care services.
  • Create a team-centered approach, integrating all personnel while supervising daily the nursing staff workflow and activities.
  • Evaluate and verify employee performance through the review of completed work assignments and work techniques.
  • Conduct peer reviews and performance evaluations of Nursing Staff.
  • Assist with coordination of Performance Improvement Program for the Psychiatry & Medical Services Department.
  • Work closely with the Medical Director on performance improvement and clinical issues.
  • Develop staff by identifying staff development and training needs and ensuring training is obtained.
  • Communicate daily with department head regarding departmental issues, keeping department head abreast of situations and activities affecting consumers, providers and physicians.
  • Coordinate community nursing activities with social work staff to ensure continuity of care.
  • Ensure that nursing staff review and complete Personal Health Reviews (PHR’s) within the 24 hour completion standard.
  • Oversee the recommendations resulting from the review of relevant medical history.
  • Develop resources and staff skills to provide the consumer and family with information regarding disease prevention, health maintenance, safety and recovery.
  • Complete psychiatric and clinical documentation in accordance with required deadlines and guidelines.
  • Conduct research and surveys pertaining to nursing and health education issues, and prepare reports.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned
  • Collaborate with other departments and professional colleagues to integrate the work of the medical providers with the work of our other colleagues.
  • Maintain individual credentials and participate in education and training as necessary to maintain current competency in skill areas necessary to perform job duties.
  • Follow oral and written direction completing tasks as assigned by due dates.
  • Maintain working knowledge of software applications used in the performance of daily duties.
  • Comply with and maintain competence with all applicable laws, regulations, standards, and rules governed under Medicare, Medicaid, the Michigan Department of Community Health (MDCH), Michigan Department of Human Services (MDHS), Joint Commission, and any applicable funding sources.
  • Understand, adhere and maintain competence with all MCMHA and CMHPSM standards, policies, procedures.
  • Comply with and maintains competence with the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) regulations as they pertain to privacy and confidentiality.
  • Interact appropriately with managers and peers.
  • Perform required duties with an awareness of impact upon the Authority structure as a whole.
  • Facilitate teamwork both within MCMHA and between MCMHA and those in the community who work with our consumers.
  • Ensure that staff are trained and evaluated on their knowledge of, and adherence to compliance policies and procedures specific to their jobs.
