About The Position

Get early exposure to patient care with Geisinger's Nurse Internship! This paid, hands-on experience is designed for underclassmen nursing students. You'll shadow a team member in a nursing support role, assist with basic patient care, and learn how hospital teams work together to deliver high-quality care. It's a great way to build confidence, grow your clinical skills, and experience Geisinger's culture. Please Note: Nurse Interns do not perform procedures requiring state licensure. This posting serves as the standard requisition for all Nurse Intern positions. Within one week of submitting your application, you will receive a survey to indicate your preferred location for participation. Participating Locations: Geisinger Medical Center - Danville Geisinger Bloomsburg Hospital Geisinger Shamokin Area Community Hospital Geisinger Wyoming Valley Medical Center - Wilkes-Barre Geisinger Community Medical Center - Scranton Geisinger Medical Center Muncy Geisinger Jersey Shore Hospital Geisinger Lewistown Hospital Eligibility: Applicants must be underclassmen-upcoming sophomores, or juniors-currently enrolled in an accredited nursing program . Seniors, or students graduating in December 2026 or May 2027, are not eligible for this internship track and should apply to the Nurse Externship instead. Internship program dates: May 26th- August 8th . Interns are required to attend a mandatory orientation from May 26th- May 29th.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or Equivalent (GED)-Nursing
  • Applicants must be underclassmen-upcoming sophomores, or juniors-currently enrolled in an accredited nursing program

Responsibilities

  • Assists in patient care under the immediate supervision of a registered nurse preceptor and as assigned by the nurse in charge.
  • Functions as a member of the nursing team.
  • Identifies, observes, reports, and documents the social and psychological needs of the patient and family.
  • Identifies, observes, and documents the physical needs of the patient according to standard.
  • Reports changes in patient condition to the registered nurse.
  • Obtains and maintains the integrity of specimens in accordance with policy and procedure, according to physician order.
  • Monitors blood glucose, urine and stool, and sputum.
  • Assists patient with ADL's.
  • Assists with patient transfer and transport, as needed.
  • Participates in three expanded observational experiences in the ten-week period.
  • Participates actively in patient safety improvement and management program.
  • Assumes responsibility for identifying processes or systems that could potentially lead to errors and adverse events.
  • Participates in required organizational and departmental patient safety education programs and other activities designed to improve departmental and organizational patient safety.
  • Reports promptly serious events and incidents in accordance with established hospital policy and procedure.
  • Staff have access to non-controlled medications storage and supply areas and can transport non-controlled medications as necessary to meet the needs of the clinic and unit.
  • Accountable for satisfying all job specific obligations and complying with all organization policies and procedures.
