About The Position

The George Washington University Hospital’s Emergency Department (ED) provides comprehensive care for patients experiencing acute medical conditions, trauma, and critical illnesses. As a Level I Trauma Center, the ED at GW Hospital is equipped to handle the most complex emergency cases, with highly specialized teams available 24/7. The Emergency Department is a 62-bed unit, including resuscitation rooms, fast-track areas, and specialized spaces for trauma, cardiac emergencies, and stroke. Our ED is supported by state-of-the-art diagnostic and treatment facilities, with rapid access to radiology, laboratory, and surgical services. The ED is staffed by board-certified emergency physicians, nurse practitioners, and a highly skilled team of emergency-trained nurses. Our focus is on delivering immediate, patient-centered care while maintaining close collaboration with other specialty areas for seamless patient transitions and long-term outcomes.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) required; Master’s degree preferred.
  • Current RN license or eligibility to practice in the District of Columbia.
  • Minimum of 3–5 years of Emergency Department nursing experience, with at least 2 years in a leadership role.
  • BLS, ACLS, and PALS required; TNCC and CEN preferred.
  • Exceptional communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills; ability to thrive in a fast-paced, high-acuity environment.

Responsibilities

  • Manage day-to-day operations during the PM shift, including staffing, patient flow, and resource allocation.
  • Provide leadership, mentoring, and supervision to nursing staff to maintain clinical excellence.
  • Monitor and ensure compliance with clinical protocols, policies, and regulatory standards.
  • Serve as a liaison between staff, patients, families, and hospital leadership, ensuring effective communication.
  • Identify and address operational or clinical issues promptly to enhance patient outcomes and staff satisfaction.
  • Participate in performance improvement initiatives and contribute to the department’s strategic objectives.
