About The Position

The Nursing Laboratory Coordinator/Academic Coach is responsible for oversight and coordination of the laboratory learning environments including skills and simulation laboratories and academic coaching. The Nurse Laboratory Coordinator is committed to creating quality learning environments for the nursing student focused on academic excellence contributing to the attainment of quality student and program outcomes. Promotes student success through academic coaching and tutoring. Collaborate with students to strengthen their understanding, skills, and confidence in core nursing concepts.

Requirements

  • Hold a Baccalaureate in Nursing degree; preferably a graduate degree in Nursing.
  • A minimum of two years clinical nursing experience.
  • Teaching experience in a pre-licensure nursing program preferred.
  • Current, unencumbered Maryland Registered Nurse license or a multistate licensure privilege to practice registered nursing.
  • Experience working in a nursing simulation laboratory preferred.
  • Current Certified Healthcare Simulation Educator (CHSE) or willing to complete certification within 2 years.
  • Excellent/strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal and team collaboration abilities.
  • Capacity to work effectively in a team environment and work well independently.
  • Capacity to organize, prioritize, and coordinate multiple projects and schedules.
  • Technological proficiency, including simulation/lab equipment, instructional platforms, and Microsoft Office.
  • Capacity to deal effectively with a wide range of relationships and confidential situations.
  • Ability to mentor, support, and lead students and colleagues in academic and lab environments.
  • Commitment to transparency, continuous improvement, and professional ethics.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee the smooth running of the laboratory settings used in the Nursing Program: nursing skills laboratory and simulation laboratory.
  • Orient all new faculty and students to the nursing skills laboratory and simulation laboratory.
  • Work with clinical partners that contribute simulation laboratory space and time for college students to engage in simulation onsite at their facilities.
  • Ensure all laboratory equipment is functioning properly (preventative maintenance, repairs, and calibration); report non-functioning equipment and ensure broken equipment is fixed and working properly prior to faculty and student use.
  • Ensure all laboratory supplies are sufficient to meet teaching needs; order new supplies as needed.
  • Ensure a safe (physically and psychologically) learning environment in the skills and simulation laboratories.
  • Ensure quality educational experiences in the simulation and skills laboratories.
  • Ensure all requirements related laboratory experiences adhere to the Maryland State Board of Nursing and accreditation requirements.
  • Serve on related Nursing Program committees.
  • Participate in Nursing Program meetings.
  • Work with nursing faculty on the development and currency of simulation scenarios and experiences used in their courses.
  • Support faculty in the design, development, and implementation of simulation experiences and evaluation of learning in the laboratory environments.
  • Assist with using simulation technology during learning sessions.
  • Assist faculty in setup and maintenance of skills laboratory and simulation sessions.
  • Engage in ongoing education on best practices in the skills laboratory and simulation laboratory including the International Nursing Association for Clinical Simulation and Learning (INACSL) Healthcare Simulation Standards of Best PracticeTM to optimize achievement of expected outcomes.
  • Serve as a liaison between the Nursing Program and clinical agency simulation laboratories.
  • Assist faculty in teaching and applying the clinical judgment framework taught in the nursing program.
  • Supervise students during practice in the nursing laboratory to reinforce instruction previously conducted by faculty.
  • Work with individual students to develop an individual plan of remediation that is student specific, and faculty mediated.
  • Provide individualized academic coaching and tutoring to nursing students, focusing on critical content areas, study strategies, test-taking skills, and clinical reasoning.
  • Collaborate with nursing faculty to identify at-risk students and develop tailored support plans to enhance student learning and retention.
  • Assist in creating and facilitating supplemental instruction aligned with course objectives and NCLEX preparation.
  • Serve as a liaison between students and faculty by offering feedback on student progress, learning challenges, and resource needs.
  • Maintain accurate records of student interactions and academic support provided, contributing to department efforts in tracking student success outcomes.
  • Work with the Nursing Director in developing a budget for laboratory activities.
  • Liaise with the skills and simulation laboratory vendors.
  • Working with faculty, develop the schedule of laboratory and simulation sessions for all nursing courses.
  • Order all necessary skills laboratory and simulation supplies and equipment.
  • Comply with regulatory guidelines, including FERPA and Title IX.
  • Perform additional duties and projects as assigned by the Nursing Program Director.
