About The Position

The Psychiatric Institute of Washington provides comprehensive behavioral healthcare for adolescents, adults, and senior adults suffering from mental health and addictive illnesses. PIW is a 150 bed, short-term, acute care hospital offering inpatient, partial and intensive outpatient hospitalization, as well as specialized treatment programs for chemical dependency. PIW has an excellent reputation as an innovative hospital with caring, dedicated staff, experienced in the delivery of behavioral healthcare. Situated in the safe, historical Tenleytown neighborhood, PIW is one mile from the Tenleytown Metro stop and within walking distance to local cafes and restaurants. Position Summary: Directs activities necessary for efficient functioning of all systems and personnel on the unit. Supervises Nurses (RNs, LPNs) and provides direct care to patients. Manages the provision of nursing care and coordinates patient requirements with the Nurse Manager.

Requirements

  • Bachelors Degree in Nursing required.
  • RN License in the District of Columbia.
  • BLS Certification.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite including Word, Excel, PowerPoint.
  • Basic Health Information Management (HIM) system knowledge required – Cerner preferred.
  • Four or more years of inpatient psychiatric experience with clinical and administrative responsibilities.
  • At least two years of experience in a supervisory position.
  • 3-8 years of overall nursing experience required.
  • Ability to collaborate with staff and patients of all racial, ethnicities, genders, and socioeconomic backgrounds.
  • Experience with policies and procedures related to the scope of nursing.
  • The ability to manage staff and advise senior management.

Responsibilities

  • Directs activities necessary for efficient functioning of all systems and personnel on the unit.
  • Supervises Nurses (RNs, LPNs) and provides direct care to patients.
  • Manages the provision of nursing care and coordinates patient requirements with the Nurse Manager.
  • Coordinates resources from other disciplines and departments in the delivery of patient care.
  • Ensures that diagnostic, consultative, and medical services for patients are provided promptly as ordered.
  • Determines the effectiveness of the plan of care through documentation of patient care outcomes.
  • Provides professional consultation to colleagues and other hospital staff and seeks assistance from peers as needed.
  • Actively participates in nursing and hospital committees.
  • Rounds to assess current staffing on units.
  • Records staffing corrections in the shift report log binder.
  • Investigates patient and staff grievances promptly.
  • Informs Nurse Managers, Program Directors, and Director of Nursing of grievances as needed.
  • Evaluates and verifies employee performance through the review of completed work assignments and work techniques.
  • Identifies staff development and training needs and ensures that training is provided.
  • Interviews and selects nursing staff.
  • Facilitates in-service training.
