The 6D Geriatric Psych Unit at Lutheran Hospital specializes in the unique care of patients ages 55 and older. The caregivers in this department are dedicated to helping patients achieve healthier and more productive lives through evaluation, treatment and stabilization. As Nursing Department Assistant, you will assist in facilitating this goal by creating a safe and healing environment, performing various support tasks, and documenting patient condition. In this role, you can make a lasting difference in the lives of patients and the community every day. A caregiver in this role works evenings 3:00 p.m. – 11:30 p.m.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma/GED
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification through the American Heart Association (AHA) within new hire period

Nice To Haves

  • State Tested Nursing Assistant (STNA) Certification
  • Healthcare, inpatient or nursing home experience

Responsibilities

  • Provide for patients’ daily living activities.
  • Assist in direct patient care tasks with direction from a Registered Nurse (RN), such as EKGs, blood glucose monitoring, specimen collection, dressing changes, colostomy care and taking vital signs.
  • Transport patients and complete errands.
  • Maintain supplies, equipment function and a safe, clean environment.
  • Organize patient care assignments and seek assistance for difficult assignments or problem solving.
  • Document care provided in the patient’s record.
  • Utilize the pain scale, ask patients about their pain and report information to an RN or LPN.
  • Make hourly patient rounds, assure safety measures are in place and ensure that all bed alarms are activated during hourly rounds.
