About The Position

UPMC Hamot is hiring a Nursing Assistant to join the team on 4 South Trauma! This position is part-time, rotating days and nights. One 8-hour and one 12-hour shift per week. Holiday and weekend coverage required. Previous patient care experience highly preferred. Title and salary will be determined based upon education and experience.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Successful completion of UPMC nursing assistant training program.
  • Knowledge of body mechanics and transfer techniques.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) OR Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) required based on AHA standards that include both a didactic and skills demonstration component within 30 days of hire.

Nice To Haves

  • Previous patient care experience highly preferred.
  • Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Provides direct patient care including bathing, feeding, toileting, ambulating, and transporting.
  • Maintains a clean, safe, and organized environment to support patient recovery. Completes safety checks and cleans equipment, rooms, and common areas.
  • Acquires and distributes supplies; performs messenger functions and stocks rooms. Delivers nourishments, fills water pitchers, and distributes patient mail.
  • Performs core nursing assistant tasks: blood glucose, weights, vital signs, I&O, specimen collection, Foley care.
  • Applies, monitors, and removes restraints per protocol. Reports patient status changes and provides feedback to RN.
  • Receives feedback constructively and identifies learning needs. Seeks help with planning and prioritization; participates in self-review.
  • Communicates clearly with healthcare team; understands cultural diversity and workplace safety.
  • Demonstrates accountability, enthusiasm, and commitment to patients and colleagues.
  • Suggests and supports departmental improvements; takes ownership of assignments.
  • Reports equipment issues and maintains respectful relationships. Responds to call lights, phones, passes meal trays, and transports patients.
  • Provides diversional activities to reduce restraint use. Documents care accurately and completes clerical tasks.
  • Adheres to safety protocols and hospital policies, including bloodborne pathogen procedures.
  • Responds appropriately to emergent situations within scope of role. Provides one-on-one companionship/supervision as needed.
  • Performs advanced tasks: telemetry monitor application, HAC prevention, urine specimen collection, restraint management, and intra-hospital transport. Access to medications is limited to distribution to nurses.
