About The Position

Geisinger is offering a Nursing Assistant position on the 5 Advanced Acute Care Medical/Oncology Unit at Geisinger Lewistown Hospital. This role comes with market-leading pay rates, shift differentials for evening, nights, and weekend shifts, and up to $40,000 in financial support for those aspiring to become an RN. The Nursing Assistant is responsible for a broad spectrum of clerical duties and direct patient care activities, crucial for supporting the care team in delivering quality care. Key aspects include providing patient care under the direction of a licensed nurse, observing and documenting patient needs, reporting changes, managing specimens, assisting with daily living activities, and ensuring patient safety. The position also involves significant clerical work related to patient admissions, transfers, discharges, and processing orders, as well as coordinating patient transportation and managing supplies. The successful candidate will also operate and troubleshoot clerical equipment and participate in patient safety initiatives, potentially serving as a preceptor and mentor for new staff and students. The role includes transporting non-controlled medications and blood products.

Requirements

Responsibilities

  • Responsible and accountable for performing a wide range of clerical duties and direct patient care activities, depending on the need of the unit.
  • Meet the qualifications to provide care for patients in the specific age range in their assigned clinical area.
  • Provide patient care as directed by the licensed nurse, within the nursing assistant scope of practice, in meeting the multidisciplinary care plan established for each patient.
  • Identify, observe and document the physical needs of the patient according to established standards.
  • Report changes in patient condition to licensed personnel in a timely manner.
  • Obtain and maintain the integrity of specimens in accordance with policy and procedure, according to physician order.
  • Provide for or assist patients with activities of daily living and fulfill designated and delegated responsibilities for ongoing continuum of care.
  • Provide one to one patient safety watch as assigned following established policies and procedures.
  • Assist in problem solving, trouble shooting and taking corrective measures in care and maintenance of equipment and supplies.
  • Responsible for actively participating in patient safety improvement and management program.
  • Serve as a preceptor and mentor for new staff and students in a positive manner.
  • Perform clerical duties for admissions, transfers, discharges, and deaths according to standards and facilitates patient throughput activities.
  • Transcribe and process orders according to unit standards.
  • Release and confirm ordered tests to appropriate departments.
  • Coordinate transportation of patients to multiple tests.
  • Communicate patient related information promptly to the appropriate care team member.
  • Assist in ordering supplies.
  • Communicate with food services to ensure appropriate patient diets.
  • Operate, problem solves, and takes corrective measures for clerical equipment. Includes scheduling maintenance of computers, fax machines, phones, etc.
  • Participate in obtaining and communicating electronic information as pertinent to the nursing unit.
  • Staff have access to non-controlled medications storage and supply areas and can transport non-controlled medications as necessary to meet the needs of the clinic or unit.
  • Assist with transporting non-controlled medications to and from Pharmacy and within the unit as needed.
  • Assist with transporting blood products to and from Blood Bank as needed.
