About The Position

The Nursing Assistant (NA) will provide basic nursing care to Veterans/residents that have multiple complex medical and or emotional conditions under the supervision of the Registered Nurse (RN) or the Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN)/Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN). The NA has the ability to observe, identify and respond to patient's needs for care including equipment to assist with care. The incumbent meets the needs of the Veteran and as appropriate the Veteran's family, caregiver and/or significant other, the Veteran's representative, visitors to the VA facilities, all VA staff and other customers while supporting VA missions.

Responsibilities

  • Beginning to engage in-group activities such as off-station trips, reality orientation, current events and other therapeutic groups.
  • Learning to utilize principles of proper body mechanics while caring for patients.
  • Reports patient observations to the RN and or other members of the treatment team.
  • Reports unusual signs/symptoms to the RN and documents the findings to the RN or other members of the care team.
  • Is trained to set up patient care related equipment
  • Organizes and obtains routine supplies and equipment.
  • Assist with orienting patient/family to unit routines and policies.
  • Work as a cooperative, courteous member of the interdisciplinary team.
  • Safeguarding the patient's right to privacy by judiciously protecting information of a confidential nature.
  • Uses proper safety practices. x Learning to utilize equipment and supplies according to procedures.
  • Learning to utilize principles of proper body mechanics and follows procedures for use of patient care equipment to prevent injury to self or others in all settings such as utilization of lifting equipment.
  • Learning to care for secluded, restrained or suicidal status patients.
  • Though assigned to a specific unit, he/she may be utilized in other care settings as need dictates.
  • All other duties as assigned by the Facility, Department, and/or Agency.
