About The Position

Northern Arizona VA Health Care System is looking for a Nursing Assistant to join the Nursing Service team! This is a night shift position. The position is permanent and full-time, with a salary range of $38,089 - $62,183 per year, classified under GS 3 - 5. The job is located in Prescott, AZ, and does not allow for remote work or telework. Travel is not required, and relocation expenses are not reimbursed.

Requirements

  • Must be a U.S. Citizen.
  • Proficient in written and spoken English.
  • Must pass pre-employment physical examination/evaluation.
  • Participation in the seasonal influenza vaccination program is required.
  • Participation in the COVID-19 vaccination program is required.
  • Must be able to complete an online onboarding process.
  • Must serve a probationary period if selected.
  • Subject to background/security investigation.
  • Must be registered with Selective Service if applicable.

Nice To Haves

  • One year of recent nursing assistant experience.
  • Experience in another medical field (licensed practical nurse, health technician, etc.).
  • Successful completion of 2 years above high school in an accredited institution with courses related to nursing care.

Responsibilities

  • Utilizes glucose monitoring machine to receive glucose readings for veterans and refers deviation to appropriate health care staff.
  • Provides direct care for complex veterans.
  • Makes observations of subtle changes in resident's condition, such as behavior shifts, mood, skin coloring, appetite, etc., and acts accordingly within the NA's assigned role.
  • Documents care given, observations, and responses on appropriate tools or forms.
  • Responds appropriately to subtle patient changes by contacting the appropriate nursing personnel.
  • Administers complete tracheostomy care, including suctioning.
  • Monitors and documents patient intake and output, reporting deviations timely and accurately.
  • Performs nursing procedures within scope of practice and according to policies and standard procedures.
  • Works on small group activities with veterans/residents according to the patients/resident treatment plan.
  • Actively participates in Treatment Planning Meetings.
  • Utilizes equipment to promote veteran self-care, such as lift equipment and Hydro sound Tubs.
  • Verbally provides patient information to the treatment team for inclusion in the veteran/residents' plan of care.
  • Enters information about the residents' condition in the chart, utilizing appropriate formats.
  • Participates in maintaining a clean, safe environment for the patient/resident.
  • Removes defective equipment, reports hazards, observes safety regulations, and contributes to infection control.
  • Serves as the unit safe patient handling liaison.
  • Serves as preceptor and mentor to other NAs.
  • Orients members of the health care team to the units as appropriate.
  • Functions as a member of the unit base counsel.
  • Manages distributed patient behavior and appropriately intervenes.
  • Initiates basic life support and takes appropriate action.
