Clinical Support Technician II (Nursing Assistant II + Clerical) needed for GI Surgery Acute Care Unit - 6 Memorial. 6 Memorial is a 28-bed, acute care, inpatient nursing unit at UNC Medical Center in Chapel Hill. Our interdisciplinary team provides evidence-based and high-quality care primarily to adult post-surgical patients with weight loss issues, gastrointestinal (GI) cancers, and complex non-cancer GI-related illnesses. Our surgical oncology physician leaders are under the Surgical Oncology Division. This division is affiliated with the Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center. These physician leaders are nationally renowned for their expertise in improving colorectal, GI, and endocrine malignancy through clinical excellence, medical education, and research. Similarly, our GI physicians are known for their efforts in enhancing patient care for upper and lower gastrointestinal patients. Lastly, we are recognized nationally as a Bariatric Center for Excellence. Our nursing team members can expect to work within the full scope of his or her practice in a multi-disciplinary setting. Our patient populations require close post-operative observation, occasional remote cardiac telemetry, early aggressive mobilization, pulmonary hygiene, extensive physical therapies, IV, central line/PICC line care, administration of TPN, anticoagulation, oxygen therapy, pain management, blood product administration, intake/output and ostomy care. Additionally, multiple tube/drain care to include, chest tubes, Foley catheters, NG tubes, G-tubes, J-tubes, J/P drains, and rectal tubes. Extensive complex wound management along with multimodal nutritional support is given throughout the course of hospitalization. This is a 36 hours per week position; working rotating shifts days/nights (7am - 7:30pm and 7pm-7:30am), with weekend and holiday rotation. This position qualifies for an extensive benefit package including PTO hours, which are accrued based on the number of worked hours.

  • Assist physicians and other health care providers with routine examinations and procedures, as well as procurement of equipment and supplies.
  • Critically review patient care documentation making note of any significant changes in the patient's condition and make an immediate report to a registered nurse or physician.
  • Provide a variety of clerical tasks to include but not limited to organizing and prioritizing workload, greeting and directing visitors, researching information as requested by nurses and physicians, reviewing orders for logic and clarity, revising orders as requested by the nurse, answering the telephone/ patient call lights, transcribing physician orders, and maintaining medical records. Perform routine quality assurance audits, safety checks, and inventory of supplies.
  • Provide administrative and clerical support including PI audits and data entry.
  • Provide clinical support assistance to include, but not limited to, cleaning the work area, maintaining office equipment, troubleshooting common software and hardware problems, changing linens, checking supply inventory, re-stocking supplies, transporting patients/ supplies/ specimens, and assisting in the orientation of new employees and students.
  • Provide direct personal care to patients as outlined in plan of care activities such as bathing, dressing, feeding, assisting with ambulation. Measure and record vital signs, and patient height and weight. May be responsible for specimen collection, skin preps/scrubs, catheter care, capillary blood glucose checks, simple wound care, range of motion exercises, and/or postural drainage. Performs Oxygen room set-up and monitors oxygen flow-rate, performs oropharyngeal and nasopharyngeal suctioning, tracheostomy care, fecal impaction removal, sterile dressing change wound irrigation, IV fluid assembly and monitoring, IV site care and discontinue peripheral IV, ostomy irrigation and care, urinary catheterization and irrigation, performs established oral, nasogastric, gastrostomy tube feeding.
  • Reinforce routine teaching given to patients by the registered nurse or physician and document patient understanding of instructions. Distributes patient education materials at the request of patients and/or health care providers.
  • High School diploma or General Education Development (GED).
  • Listed as a Nursing Assistant I by the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services.
  • Licensed as a Nursing Assistant II by the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
  • Requires one (1) year of clerical or customer service experience and three (3) months of nursing assistant experience.
  • Must be fluent in verbal and written English language. Capability to develop computer skills if not competent.
  • $5,000 paid over a three (3) year commitment through the Nursing Support Incentive Program.
