About The Position

Position Summary The Nursing Assistant performs specific responsibilities under the direction and supervision of a licensed nurse. Functions within the framework of the NAI listing granted by the NC Department of Health and Human Services. Practices within the philosophy and goals of patient care services. In addition, the Nursing Assistant may be utilized in the Observer Role responsible for monitoring one or more assigned patients on a designated unit for a specified time period. Patient Care The population consists of variety of acute neonatal patients with multiple system issues that include the following: o Prematurity o Respiratory insufficiency, including ventilator patients o Complex fluid and medication management o Single and/or Multisystem injury complications o PPHN o Cardiac insufficiency and/or anomalies o CNS disorders o GU disorders o Genetic disorders o Hematological disorders o Metabolic disorders o Skin disorders o Surgical needs o Infectious diseases o Services also include patient education related to surgical procedures, disease processes, diagnostic procedures, trach care and home care post discharge. o Work collaboratively with other disciplines such as Physical Therapy, Respiratory Therapy, Lactation, Unit based Case Management and Social Work to facilitate transition to final destination. NICU receives patients from internal as well as external sources. Nursing staff monitor their patients; we are not monitored by monitor techs. BLS is required upon hire; NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program) and PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support Course) are required to be obtained within one year. Registered nurses provide care in conjunction with the nursing assistant and medical team. Assignments are based on the patients needs, the geographical location of the patients, and the resources available. The charge nurse does not have a patient assignment. NICU takes pride in our performance on quality indicators and is a member of two programs for neonatal quality. We are part of the state quality collaborative (NC Perinatal Quality Collaborative) which works with NICUs across the state to ensure all infants receive the same quality care regardless of where they are born. The NICU is also a part of an international quality/research collaborative called Vermont Oxford which is utilized as a benchmark for improvement initiatives and care. Requirements

  • High School or GED is preferred - or higher.
  • NAI listing with NC Department of Health and Human Services is required.
  • Experience in a comparable facility can only be substituted for NA I course by successful completion of challenge exam acceptable to the N.C. Department of Health and Human Services is required.
  • Current American Heart Association HeartSaver or higher certification is required.
  • De-escalation training (Non-violent crisis intervention or other de-escalation program adopted by ECU Health). If not current at the time of hire must complete within 90 days of employment and maintain without lapse during employment. This is not required for Ambulatory clinical positions.

Responsibilities

  • Participates in Quality Improvement (QI) Activities: Participates in problem solving resolution activities and identifies opportunities for improvement to change behavior. Participates in data collection. Employs safe practices, infection control, and fire and disaster regulations. Participates in cost savings activities.
  • Participates in Education: Attends and utilizes staff development programs and educational resources to meet unit objectives and/or individual objectives. Fulfills annual mandatory educational requirements. Participates in the orientation of new staff and students, as delegated by the supervising RN.
  • Follows hospital and unit-based policies and procedures: Provides quality patient care. Maintains familiarity with job description and legal implications of role. Maintains active NAI licensure/certification.
  • Builds interpersonal relations and communications. Listens to the ideas, opinions, and feelings of others. Gives and receives constructive feedback. Recognizes and intervenes when personal conflicts have the potential to interfere with patient care or team relationships. Works effectively with others in a team environment. Demonstrates behaviors and attitudes that are respectful or others and fosters enhanced communication and teamwork. Seeks help and utilizes chain of command appropriately.
  • Makes unit, department and hospital contributions: Participates in unit goal setting. Assists in cost-effective use of equipment and supplies.
  • Under the supervision of the licensed nurse, assists in providing direct patient care and completes delegated skills and task as ascribed by North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services.
  • Monitors the patient for signs of escalating behaviors. Alerts nurse if the patient exhibits risk of harming himself/herself or others. Maintains level of observation according to the patients plan of care and as ordered within medical record. Communicate effectively with the patient's care team including receiving report and providing meaningful handoff. Documents accurately on established workflows within the medical record. Provides hazard surveillance and reduces risk within the patient's physical environment. Engages patient appropriately in distraction activities as needed.
