The Nursing Assistant performs, under the supervision or direction of a Registered Nurse, those duties to assist in safe treatment and care of patients in accordance with established policies and procedures.

Requirements

  • Completion of Nursing Assistant program, BOCES or Military Hospital Corps School or equivalent with current New York State CNA certification or completion of a Nursing fundamentals course or equivalent within a RN program or a minimum of 2 years' experience working as a Nursing Assistant.
  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Knowledge of safety and infection control practices.
  • Knowledge of computer systems and/or prior clerical experience required.
  • BLS or CPR/AED training required and accepted from only 2 organizations: American Heart Association - BLS/ACLS for Healthcare Providers (CPR & AED) Program American Red Cross - CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer. No online programs from any organization will be accepted.

Responsibilities

  • Practices regular hand hygiene and complies with standard and transmission based precautions as applicable.
  • Responds appropriately to the special needs of each group served specific to age, language, gender, culture, religion/spirituality, economic background, education or literacy, developmental or cognitive disabilities, physical and developmental disabilities.
  • Under the direction of a Registered Nurse, assists with admission of patients regarding reception, equipment preparation, vital signs, obtaining actual weights, orientation to surroundings and implementation of safety measures.
  • Performs direct care with attention to personal hygiene, safety, comfort and skin care while anticipating the needs of the patient and family.
  • Responsible to prepare patients for meals and assist with feeding as directed. Distributes water and other nourishments as needed.
  • Assists and/or transports patients in a timely and safe manner.
  • Collects and transports specimens maintaining standards mandated by regulatory agencies.
  • Demonstrates purposeful rounding utilizing key words as defined by models of care. Considers call bells as a priority and answers them immediately.
