About The Position

Ephrata Community Hospital's emergency department will see on average 30,000 patients a year. The emergency department consists of 29 beds including a 6-bed secure behavioral health area. The Nursing Assistant provides clinical support services to patient care staff by performing a variety of duties related to patient care. This includes taking patient vital signs, assisting patients with activities of daily living (e.g., bathing, feeding, toileting, etc.), inventorying and replenishing supplies and equipment, and performing special assigned and/or delegated duties such as performing EKGs, Point-of-Care testing, phlebotomy, and splinting.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED Required
  • Less than 1 year As a Nursing Assistant, EMT or a Nursing Student Required
  • Heartsaver CPR/AED Upon Hire Required

  • Certified Nurse Aide Upon Hire Preferred

Responsibilities

  • Provides general nursing care and personal care assistance to patients, including bathing, dressing, eating, changing bed linens, toileting, and positioning.
  • Assists in the preparation and transportation of patients for tests, procedures, etc.
  • Monitors patient condition levels, reports changes to the Registered Nurse.
  • Documents in ECare pain scale, input and output, removing foley catheters, vital signs and reports abnormal values to the RN.
  • Collects specimens such as blood, urine or sputum using approved techniques and procedures.
  • Obtains and documents temperature, blood pressure, weight, respiration, pulse and pulse oxygen.
  • Sets up and removes equipment and supplies; ensures equipment is functioning properly and stored appropriately.
  • Performs EKGs and/or Point-of-Care testing which may include blood glucose, hemocult and specific gravity testing.
  • Runs special errands as required. Responds to call lights.
  • Ensures patient rooms, nursing areas, supply carts, etc. are stocked with appropriate items at required levels.
  • Maintains par levels of supplies in the Emergency Department.
  • Applies splints and immobilization devices and outfits patients with crutches.
  • Maintains a visible presence in the Emergency Department between tasks.
  • Establishes a rapport with EMS providers, assists RN and EMS with initial patient contact and care upon arrival to ED bed and directs EMTs and Paramedics to RN for transfer of care reporting.
  • Demonstrates caring through spiritual, physical, emotional, psychosocial and cultural responsiveness, integrated into the plan of care.
