About The Position

This Nursing Assistant position is located within the VA Community Living Center at the Saint Cloud VA Medical Center in Saint Cloud, MN, where Veterans receive nursing home level care including help with activities of daily living as well as skilled nursing and medical care. The Nursing Assistant delivers safe, basic physical and emotional care to residents with simple to complex needs while developing technical skills under the supervision of a Registered Nurse or Licensed Practical Nurse.

Requirements

  • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • English Language Proficiency: Must be proficient in basic written and spoken English.
  • Six (6) months of general experience or one year of education above high school with courses related to the NA occupation or completion of an intensive, specialized, occupation-related training course of study or program of less than one year as a NA.
  • For GS-4: One (1) year of experience as a Nursing Assistant or in another medical field performing technical and nursing skills.
  • For GS-5: One (1) year of progressively responsible assignments and experience equivalent to the GS-4 level.

Nice To Haves

  • Previous Hospice or Long Term Care experience preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Provides nursing care to residents according to established facility procedures adhering to all VA and nursing policies, procedures, standards, and protocol.
  • Assists residents with bowel and bladder elimination as indicated, collects specimens as ordered, measures and records output as indicated, manages urinary drainage devices as directed per facility policy, performs bladder scans per facility policy.
  • Observes, maintains, and promotes skin integrity by following evidence-based practice guidelines, facility policies, procedures, and protocols.
  • Obtains, records, and reports vital signs and measurements which include temperature, pulse, respirations, blood pressure, height, weight, pulse oximetry, and pain.
  • Positions residents to promote breathing and maintain open airway, assists with set up and administration of oxygen therapy as ordered.
  • Provides direct customer service that is prompt, friendly, and cooperative.
  • Uses safe and proper techniques when providing resident care and handling equipment, using Standard Precautions and personal protective equipment.
  • Maintains a safe/clean work environment, ensuring resident privacy.
