About The Position

The Dayton VA Medical Center is seeking a Nursing Assistant for our Community Living Center - Kennedy Way. You will provide Veteran/resident care, perform clinical procedures, technical procedures, and ancillary services. This position will perform an assortment of personal care or nursing care activities which do not require licensure and/or education, including a wide range of duties to increase the comfort of the Veteran/resident. This is a Bargaining Unit Position.

Requirements

  • United States Citizenship.
  • Six months of general experience or one year of education above high school with courses related to the NA occupation.
  • Completion of an intensive, specialized, occupation-related training course of study or program of less than one year as a NA.
  • Proficiency in spoken and written English.
  • Ability to provide a range of patient/resident care and contribute to the completion of the nurse care plan.
  • Ability to observe patients/residents' physical or emotional status and refer deviations to supervisor.
  • Ability to properly use equipment, materials, and supplies in simple diagnostic and treatment procedures.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with patients/residents, their families, and other health professionals.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in another medical field (licensed practical nurse, health technician, hospital corpsman, etc.).
  • Successful completion of 2 years above high school in an accredited institution with courses related to nursing care.

Responsibilities

  • Listen attentively to report and note pertinent items.
  • Accept adults' chosen life-styles and assist necessary adjustments relating to health.
  • Recognize adults' values and function of independence and ability to be self-sustaining in life.
  • Assist patients to keep physically and socially active and to maintain peer group interactions.
  • Assist patients to cope with loss, e.g., hearing, eyesight, and death of significant others.
  • Assist patients with self-care as required, and with maintaining as much independence as possible.
  • Perform basic procedures and treatments according to the orientation/annual/unit specific competency checklist.
  • Recognize medical/behavioral emergencies and obtain immediate assistance.
  • Complete basic life support and PMDB training within orientation period.
  • Attend interdisciplinary rounds and discharge planning meetings.
  • Implement patient instruction/discharge planning interventions for assigned patients as designated by Team Leader/Charge Nurse.
  • Provide respectful care that maintains individuality, dignity, and self-esteem for Veterans.
  • Function as a therapeutic companion for Veterans who need close observation.
  • Accurately document nursing care, nursing interventions, and patient response for assigned patients.
  • Follow basic admission routine for admitting designated Veterans.
  • Provide accurate information for special incidents involving Veterans and staff members to Team Leader/Charge Nurse.
