About The Position

The Nursing Assistant position at the Veterans Health Administration is a full-time role that supports the nursing care team in providing essential care to patients in acute, sub-acute, or chronic states of illness. The position is based at a teaching hospital affiliated with the University of Kentucky Medical Center and requires flexibility to work at two different campuses. The Nursing Assistant will perform a variety of tasks to assist licensed nursing staff, ensuring a safe and therapeutic environment for patients.

Requirements

  • U.S. Citizenship is required.
  • Education or training equivalent to one year above high school with courses related to the Nursing Assistant occupation.
  • Proficiency in written and spoken English.
  • Ability to perform heavy lifting (45 lbs. and over) and other physical tasks as required.
  • Completion of an intensive, specialized, occupation-related course of study may meet experience requirements.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in a medical field performing technical and nursing skills.
  • Knowledge of therapeutic communication and technical skills for basic and intermediate treatments.
  • Ability to assist in the full range of nursing care under the direction of a Registered Nurse.

Responsibilities

  • Assist licensed nursing staff in the care of patients/residents receiving outpatient care, home or community living care.
  • Provide personal care including bathing, shaving, oral hygiene, and nail care.
  • Prepare patients for meals and assist with feeding as necessary.
  • Administer tube feedings as designated by the Registered Nurse (RN).
  • Change bed linens and maintain cleanliness in patient areas.
  • Position, hold, turn, ambulate, and transfer patients as indicated.
  • Utilize lift aids and apply supportive devices for patient safety.
  • Measure and record vital signs, height, weight, and intake/output.
  • Document patient care provided and report changes in condition to the RN.
  • Assist in post-mortem care and support family members as needed.
