About The Position

This is an exciting position that calls on the nurse to tap into all areas of their training. As a residential school the scope of the nurses involvement with the student goes well beyond what is experienced by non-residential school nurses. The job requires great flexibility, patience a willingness to work with students and parents from a wide variety of social and cultural backgrounds. It is anticipated and expected that all functions of this position will be performed in a positive and receptive manner, while helping to advance the mission and vision of New Mexico School for the Deaf.

Requirements

  • Minimum requirement is a High School diploma and a NM Board of Nursing license to practice as a Registered Nurse, and at least 5 years experience in a clinic or school health setting.
  • New Mexico Board of Nursing License to practice as a Registered Nurse (RN). (NM recognizes RNs from other Compact States. The list of those states is available at the NM Board of Nursing website)
  • Any nurse hired will be expected to have or obtain, at their own expense, within one year a PED (Public Education Department) school nurse certification.
  • Current BLS certification.
  • Ability to present to an audience.
  • Superior reading and writing skills are required for extensive documentation related to home visits and supervisory activities.
  • State and federal reports are integral to this position.
  • The applicant does not need to have sign language skills at hire but will be required to demonstrate progressive sign language acquisition and participate in sign language classes offered at NMSD.
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
  • Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.
  • To perform this job successfully, an individual should have working knowledge of Microsoft Windows, Excel, as well as various software packages including Microsoft Office.
  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
  • Ability to think independently, problem solve and work with the whole team.
  • Ability and commitment to represent the Vision, Mission and Beliefs of NMSD as both a school and an agency.

Responsibilities

  • Direct care of NMSD students this may include the following:
  • Medically fragile students with multiple disabilities
  • Tube feedings
  • Assisting with students’ personal hygiene and ADLs
  • Medication administration
  • Managing emergent illness and injury
  • Managing injuries and first aide
  • Knowledge of local resources
  • Staff and student education
  • Timely contact with parents/guardians
  • Maintaining a timely and complete electronic medical record
  • Timely communication between the various departments on campus about the changing needs of NMSD students.
