About the Unit 6 South Advanced Cardiopulmonary is a 22-bed acuity adaptable unit at Butterworth Hospital that is capable of managing both non ICU and ICU status patients admitted with advanced cardiopulmonary care needs. 6 South specializes in patients with advanced heart failure, pre or post heart or lung transplant, Left Ventricular Assist devices, Intra-Aortic Balloon Pumps, and respiratory failure necessitating Bipap, Hi-Flo Nasal Cannula, or Ventilator support via tracheostomy. Scope of work Each Nurse Tech is responsible for the delivery of quality patient care of 6-12 patients per shift, under the supervision of a Registered Nurse (RN) or Provider. Nurse Techs in this unit will set up for complex critical care procedures AND demonstrate precise sterile technique with central line dressing applications and changes. They will also do 12 Lead ECG electrode placements which requires sharp attention to detail to ensure electrodes are placed correctly using the appropriate anatomical markers and figure out any missing details. Performs basic skills per department guidelines and communicates observations to members of the health care team. Responsibilities include taking vitals, checking blood sugars, bed bathing, ambulating, wound care, catheterization and acting as a safety attendant for patients. Collects and reports physiological, psychological, sociocultural and spiritual needs of patients and families in coordination with and as delineated by the RN or Provider. Ensures that required documentation is performed in an accurate and timely manner. Orientation Employment with the 6 South unit begins with NT classroom training and a minimum of 8 -11 weeks of orientation, with the majority of the orientation being done on day shifts prior to beginning the regular schedule.
