About The Position

Assumes supervisory and professional nursing responsibilities in directing the delivery of nursing services and patient care activities of the Department of Nursing on a scheduled shift. As a member of the management team, interacts with other hospital departments, the medical staff, patients, and visitors. He/she coordinates unit services with other nursing areas, hospital services and outside agencies to achieve effective patient care. Assist in the coordination staffing needs and reassignment of staff to other areas. Considerable judgment, motivation and creativity are required to manage nursing services, and to interact with nursing staff, physicians, patients (neonates, pediatrics, adolescents, adult and geriatrics), visitors, and outside agencies to assure effective patient care Evaluates nursing care delivered and reports such to Assistant Administer/Chief Nurse Officer. Assumes employee compliance with hospital policies and other agency regulations and laws. Attends and participates in committee meetings and conferences assigned to formulate nursing policies and procedures. Coordinates nursing activities with other departmental activities throughout the hospital. Participates in teaching programs for nursing personnel. Makes rounds on nursing areas to assess the effectiveness of the delivery of nursing care and to resolve related patient care problems. Supervises and provides guidance and direction to staff nurses. Gives input on performance evaluations and counsels staff nurses as appropriate. Participates in a variety of projects designed to improve the effectiveness of the delivery of patient care. Assists nursing personnel on nursing units during busy times and emergencies. Obtains medical records from Medical Records Department after hours. Obtains dietary items for patient after hours. Responds to all Code Blue, Dr. Strong, Dr. Intern, Dr. Extern, Dr. Firestone House Supervisor Page 3 of 5 Obtains medical supplies for patient care from Materials Management after hours. Maintains confidentiality of patient/employee related activities. Communicates issues with staff performance to Nursing Directors and CNO as needed for follow up. Assures appropriate reporting for all events he / she is made aware of on the shift that they work. Performs related duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Thorough knowledge of profession nursing theories, techniques and practices, including the organization and operations of the nursing staff.
  • Thorough knowledge of management and supervisory methods, practices, and techniques.
  • Thorough knowledge of hospital organization and functions of departments, policies, regulations, and procedures.
  • Ability to direct and administer nursing services in assigned shifts.
  • Ability to work on a team which supervises, plans, schedules, and coordinates the work of personnel.
  • Ability to elicit cooperation, effectively communicate and maintain good working relationships with all personnel.
  • Ability to maintain cordial relationships with associates, patients, families, and interested community groups.
  • Assumes the responsibility and accountability for own nursing practice, including supervision of subordinates in keeping with Henry County Medical Center policies and Tennessee Nursing Practice Act.
  • Documents pertinent data related to patient, hospital, and management records.
  • Demonstrates an awareness of, and sensitivity to, patient/significant other rights as identified by the profession and within Henry County Medical Center policies.
  • Maintains confidentiality of patient/significant others and staff records.
  • Performs all aspects of job with sensitivity to Henry County Medical Center's identified and defined safety practices.
  • Performs proficiently in emergency situations by adhering to established policies and protocols while maintaining appropriate lines of communication with other health care team members.
  • Demonstrates awareness of legal issues and their impact on patient care and specific unit functions.

  • Participates in peer review, unit and Division of Nursing Quality Improvement activities.

  • Solicits guidance and seeks validation for knowledge base, skill level, and decision-making process.
  • Actively participates in continuing education programs.
  • Participates in the development and attainment of individuals and Division of Nursing goals.
  • Sitting, bending, squatting, reaching, lifting 50 lbs., walking 3 miles per shift, pushing 300 lbs.
  • Must have full use of both upper (to include hands/fingers) and lower extremities.
  • Must be able to see with corrective eye wear.
  • Must be able to hear with assistive device.
  • Ability to think and act quickly and competently to any situation which may arise.
