About The Position

Under the general supervision of the CNO, incumbent accomplishes the ICU Department’s strategic objectives by providing leadership for all nursing clinical staff through being a team leader, preceptorship, mentorship, and active team membership. The ICU Nursing Supervisor is expected to uphold and set the example of professional conduct of the profession and consistently displays planning and organizing the assigned functions required to operate and maintain departmental activities and services. Incumbent will support and provide strong leadership in improving the quality of care with evidence-based practice and best practices. Maintains confidentiality of all privileged information. Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing required; MSN strongly preferred.
  • Three (3) years of ICU clinical experience required.
  • At least two (2) years nursing management/supervisory experience required.
  • Specialty certifications required: CCRN, TNCC at minimum.
  • Current unrestricted nursing license from the state of Arizona or another compact licensing state.
  • Valid American Heart Association certification in BLS, ACLS, and PALS required upon hire. NRP certification required within 6 months of hire.
  • Must be able to successfully pass the Employee Health Program requirements and background investigation.

Responsibilities

  • Functions as the Nursing Supervisor with 24-hours responsibility for nursing services on the ICU unit.
  • Plans the work for the department, adjusting work schedules as needed to meet the staffing and patient care needs.
  • Implements personnel management, procedures, training, and career development plans, grievance procedures, safety practices as well as specific orientation and training of each employee.
  • Recommends, initiates various personnel actions, performance awards, and disciplinary actions for employees at level of authority and works collaboratively with other Nursing leaders to meet Division of Nursing, hospital and federal initiatives and goals.
  • Perform the full range of patient care duties.
  • Participate in and support efforts of various nursing and hospital-wide committees for hospital improvement and quality initiatives at Sage Memorial.
  • Maintain compliance with applicable laws, regulations, and ordinances including the Joint Commission Accreditation.
  • Oversee patient care and delegated functions based upon the nursing process and in compliance with policy & procedures and standards of care.
  • Responsible for daily assessment of the overall quality of nursing care being provided.
  • Responsible for staffing assigned nursing unit taking into consideration the staffing guidelines, skill mix, and patient acuity.
  • Responsible for motivating, teaching, coordinating orientation, and assisting nursing department staff members in providing skilled nursing care.
  • Ensure confidentiality of all employee information.
  • Complete employee evaluations accordingly and within the required time frame.
  • Display a professional spirit that fosters positive working relationships.
  • Provide written monthly and quarterly reports as required to the CNO.
  • Will uphold and be responsible for identifying and participating in quality improvement (QI) projects in departmental, division, and hospital-wide initiatives.
  • Responsible for monitoring and tracking ICU national metrics and works with Medical and Nursing leadership to address issues to ensure Sage Memorial is in compliance with regulations and good standing with quality metrics.
  • Responsible for maintaining and updating all required logs (e.g. Restraints, Transfusion, Code Blue Critiques, etc.).
  • Create and maintain ICU nursing budget annually to ensure appropriate funds for staffing, supplies, equipment, and programs.
  • Provide and support activities regarding implementation or hospital policy on Patient’s Rights and Responsibilities.
  • Provide evidence-based education and programs to support the ICU nurses in providing up to date patient educational materials.
  • Responsible for ensuring all nursing staff have completed and are in compliance with required competencies of the unit.
  • Translate diagnosis information into Navajo language or arrange for translation for patient.
  • Will serve as a superuser of different programs and equipment and act as a resource person for staff in training and competencies.
  • Participate in training, infection control, patient safety, and fire safety in-services when indicated.
  • Accept and adapt to change in work area and/or work duties.
  • Will perform nursing chart reviews on a consistent basis to ensure patient care services are provided and documented by appropriately trained staff.
  • Ensure proper provision of care to provide for physiological, psychosocial, environmental, educational, and discharge planning needs of patient.
  • Collaborate with medical providers and other discipline resources in planning, implementing, and monitoring the provision of patient care services.
  • Coordinate ordering of medical and office supplies.
  • Practice infection control and patient safety procedures.
  • Conducts nursing clinical staff meetings and trainings as appropriate.
  • Maintain staffing record of in-service participation.
  • Maintain positive working relationship with physicians.
  • Maintain professional and technical knowledge by conducting research; attending seminars, educational workshops, classes and conferences; reviewing professional publications; establishing networks; participating in professional societies; conferring with representatives of contracting agencies and related organizations.
  • Review and revise departmental policies and procedures on a regular basis.
  • Create improvement initiatives and participates in Quality Council.
  • Provide “On-call” duties as assigned.
  • Perform other duties as required.
