The Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit (CICU) is a 15-bed cardiac intensive care unit that uses advanced therapies and technologies to care for acute patient populations. The Magnet-recognized nursing team works together to address complex patient needs in a supportive environment. We are seeking a highly motivated Cardiac Nurse Specialist interested in being part of the nursing leadership team. Working in a high-acuity, multidisciplinary environment, the Nurse Specialist collaborates closely with cardiologists, intensivists, and the broader ICU team to optimize patient outcomes, with a focus on program planning, advancing nursing practice, quality and professional development. Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit (CICU) plays a critical role in managing acutely ill patients with complex cardiac conditions, including acute coronary syndromes, life-threatening arrhythmias, advanced heart failure, and patients awaiting heart transplantation. Patients require a range of advanced therapies, including intra-aortic balloon pump (IABP), Impella, veno-arterial extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (VA-ECMO), and other mechanical circulatory support (MCS) devices. Located in the new Klarman Building, the team works in a thoughtfully designed, modern space that enhances both caregiver and patient experience – including a rooftop healing garden for moments of reflection and rejuvenation. The BIDMC Nursing Mission is to build on a legacy of nursing excellence by caring with compassion, advancing the art & science of nursing, and advocating for the health of patients, families, and communities. The Nurse Specialist (T1) acts as a clinical leader with the primary goal of continuous improvement of patient outcomes and safe nursing practice. Partners with the Nursing Director in leading the professional practice at BIDMC. Maintains current professional knowledge/competencies and contributes to the advancement of nursing practice at the unit, system, local, and/or national level. Training, evaluation and competencies for this role are overseen by a Nurse Leader to the department.

Requirements

  • Master's degree in Nursing required.
  • License Registered Nurse required.
  • American Heart Association – Basic Life support Certificate required.
  • 3-5 years related work experience required.
  • Experience with computer systems required, including web based applications and some Microsoft Office applications which may include Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint or Access.

Nice To Haves

  • Five years of successful work experience in nursing with two years in a specialty area.
  • Current Clinical Nurse Specialist certification.
  • Current Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) license to practice in Massachusetts.
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification.

Responsibilities

  • Acts as a clinical leader who supports the development of staff utilizing the latest evidence-based practice relative to safe, cost-effective, and optimal nursing care.
  • Collaborates with the multidisciplinary team to integrate the holistic nursing approach into a comprehensive plan of care for the patient/family.
  • Identifies and prioritizes nursing care needs for a select population of patients/families.
  • Develops and implements care conferences or programs for individual patients or populations of patients.
  • Designs and evaluates innovative educational programs for patients/families, the community, and other healthcare providers.
  • Creates and updates nursing policies, protocols, and procedures using evidence-based data to develop nurse-sensitive indicators in order to achieve positive outcomes.
  • Collaborates with nurse specialists, unit based educators, and nursing directors on the creation and implementation of orientation, clinical competencies, and other clinical educational program development.
  • Mentors nurses in the acquisition of new skills, the effective incorporation of evidence into practice, and in career development.
  • Participates in the identification, selection, implementation and evaluation of products and equipment.
  • Collaborates with nursing colleagues and other health care professionals in conducting research and publishing scholarly works, representing BIDMC, locally and nationally.
