The School Nurse provides professional health services and coordinates resources from the school, home, and community to support the health and well-being of students and staff. The nurse plays a critical role in maintaining a safe and healthy school environment while also contributing to the academic success of all students by addressing their physical and mental health needs.

  • Assess and evaluate student health and determine how health concerns may impact learning
  • Provide direct care, first aid, and emergency response for students and staff
  • Counsel students, families, and school personnel regarding health concerns
  • Lead efforts to identify and support students whose health needs interfere with learning
  • Develop and implement disease prevention and control programs
  • Coordinate services with school-based and community healthcare providers
  • Monitor school facilities and recommend changes to promote health and safety
  • Address common health and social issues such as child abuse, substance use, nutrition concerns, and teen pregnancy
  • Conduct and follow up on mandated health screenings (vision, hearing, scoliosis)
  • Maintain accurate health records and documentation of all care provided
  • Administer medications in accordance with school policy and physician orders
  • Support special education evaluations with health assessments and participation in team meetings
  • Ensure immunization compliance and recommend exclusions for noncompliance
  • Monitor communicable diseases and oversee return-to-school procedures
  • Maintain and manage first aid supplies and health office equipment
  • Serve as a resource to students, families, and school personnel
  • Perform other nursing duties as assigned
  • Graduate of a professional nursing program approved by the Massachusetts Board of Registration in Nursing
  • Current license as a registered professional nurse in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts
  • One to three years of experience in pediatrics, community health, or a related field
  • Bachelor's degree in Nursing
  • Eligibility for certification in School Nursing by the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education
  • Strong clinical assessment and nursing skills
  • Knowledge of pediatric and adolescent health concerns
  • Ability to counsel and communicate effectively with students and families
  • Familiarity with public health principles and school health regulations
  • Proficiency in documentation and use of health record systems
  • Ability to work collaboratively with educators, administrators, and healthcare providers
  • Cultural competency and ability to serve diverse populations
  • Strong organizational and time management skills
  • Commitment to confidentiality and professional ethics
