About The Position

Ensures coordination and continuity of patient care for adolescent through geriatric patients who have long term or difficult vascular access needs in order to maintain organized and efficient care and provide support to staff and other health care professionals. Provides consultation, direction, and education related to assigned patient population to nursing staff and other health care professionals, patients and family members.

Requirements

  • Associate's degree. Specific course work: Graduate of an accredited school of nursing.
  • New hires effective June 14, 2017, must have a BSN degree from an accredited school of nursing within three (3) years of hire or transfer into the position.
  • New hires or transfers into in the position between August 1, 2013 and June 13, 2017 must abide with the conditions in his or her offer letter and the verbiage in the job description signed upon hire or transfer into the position.
  • Current employees who were hired or transferred into the position prior to August 1, 2013 will be grandfathered.
  • Knowledge of patient care and basic human needs within life span, medical terminology, aseptic techniques, acute and chronic disease processes, standard universal precautions, and anatomic structure and human body systems.
  • Ability to recognize obvious job-related emergencies.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Ability to read and write in English.
  • Insertion of vascular access devices (VADs) with and without the use of ultrasound technology. a. Review medical records for any contraindications. b. Triage and selection of appropriate device based on medications, current access stays, diagnoses, length of IV therapy, etc. c. Competently assess vasculature for patency. d. Insertion based on best practice in accordance with the most current Infusion Therapy Standards of Practice
  • Care and complication management of devices. a. Declot VADs b. Dressing changes on all PICCs, and other central lines.
  • Vascular access device audits. a. Site assessment. b. Limb measurements. c. Assessment of tubing, securement devices, and dressings.
  • Documentation of insertion and maintenance of vascular access devices or related procedures in EMR.
  • Educating staff, patients, and family members on the proper use and maintenance of VADs.
  • Current Florida Registered Nurse License
  • BLS, ACLS from the American Heart Association or American Red Cross
  • USGPIV and Powerglide Midline Catheter HealthStream trainings within 6 months of hire or transfer into the job.
  • 1-2 years practical clinical experience

  • 2 or more years' experience with clinical vascular access
