About The Position

The Nurse Practitioner holds primary responsibility for delivering clinical services to patients enrolled in cancer clinical research studies. This includes assessing, diagnosing, treating, and managing diseases and treatment-related side effects. This is a grant-funded position. The Nurse Practitioner collaborates closely with the physician leader, sub-investigators/treating physicians, and the research team of the assigned disease research team. The Montefiore NP adheres to nursing practice standards as defined by the American Nurses Association Code of Ethics, Nursing Scope and Standards of Practice, and Nursing's Social Policy Statement. The NP contributes to Montefiore Medical Center's vision, mission, values, and performance measures. The role involves participation in performance improvement/research activities, maintaining professional practice standards and clinical expertise, and demonstrating leadership skills. The NP will assess and provide care to a selected group of patients in collaboration with physicians, carrying out the plan of care for their clinical patient panel. The NP also contributes to the philosophy and objectives of their specific Division/Department and practices within their scope of care delivery.

Requirements

  • A minimum of four (4) years of experience as a Nurse Practitioner.
  • At least three (3) years practicing in oncology.
  • Demonstrated effectiveness in a clinical oncology setting.
  • Ability to provide care for participants involved in research activities while maintaining compliance with federal regulations, research standards, and clinical research protocols.
  • OHS Fit Test.
  • OHS Annual Assessment.
  • Nurse Practitioner - Adult or Family certification/license.
  • New York State Nurse Practitioner License and Registration.
  • Master Degree.
  • Infection Control certification/training.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in malignant hematology.
  • Experience with grants and treatment-related clinical trials involving human subjects.
  • ONS Chemotherapy and Biotherapy Certification.
  • AOCNP (Advanced Oncology Certified Nurse Practitioner).

Responsibilities

  • Provide clinical services to participants enrolled on early phase clinical research studies, adhering to clinical trial protocol requirements, including health history, physical exams, assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of side effects and adverse events related to investigational agents.
  • Provide clinical services and research support to research patients during clinical hours, including assessment and treatment of adverse events experienced while participating in a cancer clinical trial and providing supportive care.
  • Collaborate with physicians and other healthcare providers to coordinate patient care, evaluate the plan of care, and modify it towards health goals.
  • Communicate the plan of care to all members of the healthcare team, patients, and involved others.
  • Establish therapeutic relationships with patients and involved others, identifying satisfaction/dissatisfaction and implementing conflict resolution skills or escalating issues as needed.
  • Demonstrate respect for cultural diversity and establish collaborative and collegial relationships with healthcare team members.
  • Order, perform, and interpret diagnostic procedures and tests within the scope of privileges.
  • Develop and analyze differential diagnoses based on clinical and laboratory data.
  • Participate in a team approach to healthcare, acting as a liaison between subspecialists and other members of the research team, and maintaining communication with the interdisciplinary team.
  • Prescribe medications and educate patients and/or involved others about the drug regimen, interactions, and side effects, aiming for zero error tolerance.
  • Demonstrate critical thinking skills to problem-solve and initiate clinical decision-making, assessing patient clinical status and attempting satisfactory resolution of clinical needs.
  • Demonstrate responsibility for maintaining competencies and Good Clinical Practice (GCP), including own practice and ongoing development through participation in continuing education programs annually.
  • Support goals and activities of the team within the patient care area and at Montefiore Medical Center, contributing to the growth and development of staff and students through peer review, mentor relationships, and formal/informal education.
  • Demonstrate comprehension of clinical research principles, including adherence to federal regulations and Good Clinical Practice (GCP).
  • Contribute to problem identification and problem solving in the work environment, participating in task forces and groups as necessary.
  • Support the mission and vision of Montefiore Medical Center and the standards for nursing practice.
  • Provide a safe environment for patients/involved others, orienting them to the environment, administering medication error-free, and responding appropriately in urgent/emergent situations.
  • Demonstrate leadership skills in the coordination and delivery of patient care, coordinating an interdisciplinary plan of care, assuring 100% of patient panel have a documented plan of care, and delegating care consistent with caregiver capabilities.
  • Participate in and coordinate quality of care projects related to clinical care as directed by the Cancer Clinical Trials Office leadership and disease team physician leader.
