About The Position

WVU Medicine: Wheeling Hospital's Critical Care and Trauma Institute is seeking a Nurse Practitioner- Trauma Services! The Nurse Practitioner has coordination and clinical skills required for the comprehensive management of trauma medicine patients (including biological, social and psychological assessments). They will possess specialized skills in the care of patients and families undergoing operative and other invasive procedures. The NP coordinates involvement of medical/surgical specialty teams necessary to develop a comprehensive plan for the patient and reviews the plan of care with the other members of the clinical team, participates in directing that care. The provider will work with the team to ensure adherence to protocol requirements and regulatory guidelines. They will perform diagnostic/therapeutic procedures and coordinates discharge planning to the next level of care (as applicable). The NP will participate in the education of residents and medical/nursing students. This position will also be responsible for responding to rapid response alerts. In this capacity, the NP would assess and initiate care for the critically ill patient in the activation. Provide healthcare services consistent with state law and the requirements of the professional licensing or certification authority and/or hospital privileges, where applicable. Requirements

  • Graduate from a CCNE accredited nursing program with Master’s Degree in Nursing.
  • National Certification by one of the recognized APRN Certification Centers.
  • Licensure or eligibility for licensure, as a professional Registered Nurse and Advanced Practice Registered Nurse in West Virginia.
  • American Heart Association BLS Certification required with additional Advanced Life Support training at the discretion of the department.
  • Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS).
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS).
  • FNP ACGNP certification or ACNP required, but would consider FNP willing to complete either certification within first full credentialing cycle.
  • Eligible new graduates will be considered.

  • Acute care, critical care experience preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Manages comprehensive and individualized care for patients and families in the Inpatient/Critical care phase of hospitalization
  • With the collaboration of Critical Care or by following established protocol, orders additional tests or consults to complete the preoperative and/or pre-procedure workup
  • Performs, interprets and communicates results of common diagnostic tests.
  • Consults and communicates with Critical Care and surgical services regarding abnormal findings in the evaluations of patients.
  • Develops a comprehensive individualized plan of care for patients that include teaching, discharge planning and necessary referral to other members of the health care team.
  • Participates in physician/team rounds
  • Identifies unstable or complex patient care situations and facilitates appropriate intervention with appropriate resources.
  • Recognizes emergency situations and initiates effective emergency care
  • Demonstrates critical thinking and diagnostic reasoning skills in clinical decision making by the identification, evaluation and management of the individual needs of patients/families
  • Demonstrates the ability to utilize basic equipment in a safe manner.
  • Facilitates patient discharge/transfer by coordination of appropriate services
  • Bases decisions made/actions taken on relevant scientific principles, established standards of care and/or research findings.
  • Promotes an environment that facilitates learning by responding to appropriate patient/family preferences, priorities and readiness to learn.
  • Updates own knowledge base throughout the year.
  • Completes all identified clinical competencies.
  • Mentors nursing personnel in all levels of clinical practice.
  • Communicates effectively with patients/families, physicians and ancillary services at all levels to assure coordinated efficient patient care.
  • Documents the plan of care, interventions and evaluations in a clear and concise manner.
  • Adheres to the established Performance Expectations for WVU-UHA Employees in the areas of People, Service, Performance Improvement, and Shared Values & Culture
  • Performs initial assessment and develops plan for new admissions in conjunction with the critical care attending physician
  • Ensures patient summary (i.e. Problem List) and orders are current
  • Ensures appropriate transition to next team when patient is ready to leave the ICU
  • Performs appropriate procedures as directed by Critical Care Team and within scope of practice.
