Requirements

  • Master's Degree - Nursing; Nurse Practitioner; Degree Emphasis or Program Certificate equivalent.
  • Also must have post-graduate education and/or certification in Psychiatry.
  • 10 years of Psychiatry Staff Nursing experience will be considered an equivalent substitution for post graduate education and/or certifications in Psychiatry and 1 year as a Nurse Practitioner
  • South Carolina Official Recognition Nurse Practitioner - NLNP
  • Prescriptive Authority
  • South Carolina Nursing License
  • South Carolina Controlled Substance license; Federal DEA license
  • Basic Computer Skills
  • Knowledge of office equipment (fax/copier)
  • Mathematical Skills
  • Patient Equip( Vitals, Suction, Defib)

Responsibilities

  • Diagnoses patient conditions and their causes.
  • Interviews patients about symptoms and complaints, and determines if a psychiatric disorder has a physiological or emotional basis.
  • Screens patients for physical illness and analyzes explanations for psychiatric illness, such as developmental issues, family dysfunction, genetics, neurological trauma or social or cultural problems.
  • Assesses risk factors for mental illness and broader wellness evaluations.
  • Provides a range of therapies to patients.
  • Conducts individual, group or family counseling sessions.
  • Writes prescriptions for psychotropic medications under the supervision of psychiatrists and when state regulations allow.
  • For patients on medications, monitors the use and documents treatment results.
  • For patients experiencing a mental crisis, may intervene with therapy or medication.
  • Responsible for case management.
  • Evaluates patient progress and reports results to the treatment team.
  • Works with other medical professionals to evaluate or change treatment plans.
  • Educates staff and patients’ families about mental illness, treatment and prevention.
  • Participates in operational assessments in search of revenue enhancement, expense reductions, consolidation efficiencies and billing opportunities.
  • Participates in professional activities. Also, may conduct research, evaluate outcomes or provide peer review for scholarly publications.
