A Brief Overview The Physician's Assistant – Neurosurgery practices as a direct patient healthcare provider under the supervision of a physician. They work with patients and their families to coordinate the delivery of care. This includes but is not limited to the assessment, diagnosis, and evaluation of clients throughout the established plan of care. The Physician's Assistant – Neurosurgery shall obtain health histories and perform physical examinations, order appropriate diagnostic test and treatment regimens, and provide patient, family, and departmental staff education as needed. The Physician's Assistant – Neurosurgery will practice within the guidelines of the South Carolina Board of Medical Examiners and perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Master's Degree from an accredited physician assistant program Required
  • Minimum of 1 or more years caring for adult medical patients Required
  • Must be a highly motivated and mature professional who will work in a collaborative manner with physicians and other clinicians
  • Proficient with PC’s and Microsoft Office Software products, required.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, required.
  • Ability to work effectively with individuals and families to assist them in solving physical, mental and social health problems.
  • Ability to work effectively as a member of a health team.
  • Ability to speak and write effectively including the preparation of clear and concise reports.
  • Ability to recognize social problems which affect health.
  • Ability to instruct in the prevention of disease, good health practices, and the health care of an ill or injured person.
  • Ability to participate in the development of standardized procedures, and in accordance with established protocol, construct and interpret a medical history, perform a physical assessment, evaluate patient behavior, perform and interpret selected laboratory tests, identify problems and develop and implement treatment plans for patients.
  • Ability to maintain effective working relationships with other departments and agencies and the community.
  • Ability to consult effectively with physicians and allied health personnel.
  • Knowledge of current trends and concepts of professional nursing practices.
  • Knowledge of laws and regulations relating to the practice of medicine and nursing science basic to medicine (anatomy, pathophysiology, pharmacology, and microbiology); Knowledge of principles and practices of clinical assessment; principles and practices of common health problems; fundamentals of research.
  • Knowledge of principles of mental health; causes, treatment and prevention of communicable diseases, chronic diseases, handicapping conditions, mental illness and other disabling conditions.
  • Knowledge of principles of clinical consultation, continuity of patient care, and the community aspects of health services.
  • Current licensure with South Carolina Board of Medical Examiners in good standing to practice as a Physician Assistant Required
  • Physician Assistant-Certified (PA-C) under the NCCPA Required
  • Current state and federal DEA Controlled Substance Licensure Required
  • Basic Life Support Certified - American Heart Association Required

Nice To Haves

  • 3-5 years’ experience in the PA role neurosurgery Preferred
  • Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support Certified - American Heart Association Preferred

Responsibilities

  • Provide primary care to members, including histories, exams, lab tests, prescriptions and referrals within prescribed up to date guidelines and protocols.
  • Provide members and patients with information concerning their evaluation, diagnosis, treatment and prognosis.
  • Engage members in participation and decisions involving their healthcare.
  • Provide counseling for patients with diet, hygiene and preventative healthcare
  • Perform accurate and timely documentation of histories, subjective findings, physical exam, plans, prescriptions and follow up in Electronic Health Records System within 72 hours of the visit.
  • Performing detailed examinations of the patient, creating and implementing treatment plans
  • Monitoring patients to determine if treatment is successful and, if not, to identify which adjustments might be made
  • Ensures excellent customer satisfaction as evidenced through positive responsiveness and attentiveness to patient and family needs
  • Attends and participates in Webster Rogers chart audits per year including any corrective documentation follow-up and performs an in-service to staff / peers regarding findings, recommendations, etc
  • Participate in annual goal setting, progress reporting, and completion of annual goals as per previous year’s performance appraisal
