About The Position

The Nurse Practitioner/Physician Assistant position at Stony Brook University involves providing critical care in the Neurocritical Care Unit (NCCU) under the supervision of experienced medical professionals. The role requires dynamic individuals to monitor and care for critically ill neurosurgical and neurological patients, perform bedside procedures, and collaborate with the healthcare team to ensure effective patient management. The position includes a comprehensive orientation and training program for new staff, regardless of prior experience.

Requirements

  • Graduate from an ARC-PA accredited Physician Assistant program with a NYS Physician Assistant license.
  • NCCPA certified or must obtain certification by start date.
  • NIHSS, ENLS, BLS, and ACLS certifications required upon hire.
  • Current NYS RN licensure for Nurse Practitioners with a Master's degree in Nursing.
  • NYS certification as Family or dual certified Pediatric and Adult Nurse Practitioner.
  • Two years of nursing experience in relevant fields such as neurosurgery, neurology, or intensive care.

Nice To Haves

  • One year or greater experience as an Advanced Practice Provider (APP) in the emergency department or intensive care unit.

Responsibilities

  • Provide care for critically ill neurosurgical and neurological patients in a 14-bed closed Neurocritical Care Unit.
  • Monitor patients' clinical status and deliver appropriate medical care promptly.
  • Communicate effectively with team members and collaborating teams.
  • Perform common bedside procedures such as placement of Mid lines, PICC lines, Arterial lines, and Central lines.
  • Assist with bronchoscopy and Point of Care Ultrasound (POCUS).
  • Manage complex ventilator and airway situations.
  • Conduct comprehensive physical and neurological exams on patients.
  • Diagnose, treat, order, and interpret laboratory and radiological exams in collaboration with attending physicians.
