The Palliative Care Service delivers specialist care to patients with life‑limiting illness across the inpatient setting and liaises closely with community services. The multidisciplinary team works closely with patients, families, and carers to promote comfort, dignity, and quality of life, and collaborates with acute services, general practitioners, and community providers across the district. Belmont Hospital offers a supportive, collaborative work environment in a peaceful location close to Lake Macquarie and Newcastle. The Nurse Practitioner – Palliative Care provides advanced, autonomous clinical care to patients with life‑limiting illness across inpatient and community settings. The role focuses on comprehensive assessment, clinical management, symptom control, care coordination, and advance care planning in partnership with patients, families, and the multidisciplinary team. The Nurse Practitioner – Palliative Care will be supported by a collaborative multidisciplinary team, senior clinicians, and nursing leadership within Hunter New England Local Health District. A structured orientation and onboarding plan is provided on commencement, tailored to the role and local service model. Ongoing support includes access to clinical supervision, peer Nurse Practitioner networks, mentoring, and professional development opportunities. The service supports continuing education, reflective practice, and involvement in quality improvement and service development activities. The ideal candidate is an experienced and compassionate Nurse Practitioner with strong clinical expertise in palliative care and a commitment to person‑centred, values‑based practice. They demonstrate confidence working autonomously with patients who have complex, life‑limiting illness, while contributing effectively within a multidisciplinary team. The successful candidate will be adaptable, resilient, and motivated to contribute to a supportive, collaborative team while advancing palliative care practice within Belmont Hospital and the broader Hunter New England health system. Requirements

  • Current AHPRA registration as a Registered Nurse
  • Endorsement as a Nurse Practitioner
  • Relevant Masters‑level qualification enabling NP endorsement
  • Advanced clinical experience in palliative or related specialty
  • Prescribing authority with MBS/PBS eligibility
  • Current Class C NSW Driver Licence
  • Endorsed Nurse Practitioner with advanced clinical assessment, diagnostic, and prescribing skills
  • Demonstrated experience in palliative and end‑of‑life care, including symptom management and advance care planning
  • High-level communication skills, particularly in complex, sensitive, and emotionally challenging situations
  • Strong clinical judgement, accountability, and ability to make independent decisions
  • Commitment to compassionate, culturally safe, and family‑centred care
  • Ability to collaborate effectively across inpatient, community, and primary care settings

Responsibilities

  • Conducting advanced clinical assessments
  • Prescribing and managing medications
  • Ordering and interpreting diagnostics
  • Developing and evaluating palliative care plans
