About The Position

The Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant – MRI provides expert clinical support within the Radiology department, specializing in Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI). This role is responsible for ensuring the safety, appropriateness, and optimization of MRI examinations by assessing patient readiness, determining imaging protocols, managing contrast administration, and collaborating closely with radiologists and multidisciplinary staff. The APP promotes high-quality imaging and patient-centered care consistent with enterprise standards and guidelines.

Responsibilities

  • Finalize MRI protocols by determining the most appropriate protocol and/or additional sequences to best meet the patient’s clinical needs based on order, history, and clinical indication, in accordance with Radiology imaging standards.
  • Review prior imaging to identify potential safety issues such as unknown implants, devices, or foreign bodies that may contraindicate MRI.
  • Collaborate with radiologists on complex cases or when additional imaging input is needed.
  • Identify contrast allergies and modify orders accordingly, choosing to perform MRI without contrast or with an alternative contrast agent when clinically indicated.
  • Assess, diagnose, and intervene in cases of potential or actual contrast reactions occurring during or after administration, following Mayo Enterprise Contrast and
  • Medication Subcommittee guidelines.
  • Treat allergic or adverse reactions promptly and appropriately.
  • Evaluate the need for premedication in patients with prior contrast reactions or other safety concerns.
  • Discuss risks and benefits of MRI and/or contrast administration with patients, including those who are pregnant or have devices/implants.
  • Obtain informed consent when required (e.g., for MRI with implanted devices or foreign bodies).
  • Advise and order sedation when appropriate; assess for allergies or contraindications, and discuss related concerns with patients.
  • Perform minor procedures such as shunt adjustments, staple removal, and suture removal as needed.
  • Respond to rapid response and code blue situations as part of the care team.
  • Serve as a clinical resource and consultant to technologists, nurses, scheduling staff, and other departments regarding patient care, MRI appropriateness, and imaging protocols.
  • Address scheduling discrepancies or missing orders by reviewing provider notes, contacting ordering providers, and recommending additional or alternative exams when indicated.
  • Communicate effectively with radiologists and other team members to ensure seamless coordination of care.
  • Assist in optimizing departmental workflows and patient throughput by expediting appointments and resolving scheduling or order-related issues.
  • Support continuous quality improvement initiatives and contribute to education and training within the MRI and Radiology departments.
