With 204-beds, it is the third largest of Duke Health’s four hospitals and offers a comprehensive array of services, including cancer, cardiovascular, neuroscience, advanced gastrointestinal, and wound healing care. Hospitalist APP Providers in the Hospital Medicine Department are clinicians who provide clinical care for patients admitted at Duke University Health System hospitals. They support surgical and specialty services through consultative general internal medicine practice, as well as teach staff, graduate medical trainees, and medical students on inpatient educational rotations.

Requirements

  • Graduate of ARC accredited Physician Assistant Program for PA.
  • Graduate of MSN or DNP Nurse Practitioner Program for adult care for NP.
  • PA-C certification for PA.
  • AGACNP, ACNP, AGNP, FNP certification for NP.
  • Current unrestricted medical license issued by NCMB for PA.
  • Current unrestricted RN license issued by or recognized by the NCBON for NP.
  • Federal and State prescriptive authority.
  • Current ACLS certification required before hire.
  • Inpatient APP experience preferred, but will consider new grads.

Responsibilities

  • Engage in direct patient care activities and medical/clinical practice as the principal component of overall professional responsibility within the Department.
  • Assessment, evaluation, diagnostic determination, ongoing treatment and clinical management of patients.
  • Make referrals for consultation when necessary.
  • Direct care planning.
  • Order medications and therapeutic treatments when warranted.
  • Authorize transfers.
  • Conduct risk assessments.
  • Determine readiness and planning for discharge for inpatients in care.
  • Maintain direct contact and consultation with patient family members, friends, advocates, and others to ensure effective communication of patient status and care plans.
  • Communicate extensively and ongoing with community primary care physicians managing the care of patients in the hospital.
  • Perform day-to-day patient contact/rounding/care management that encourages professional input from all members of the patient care team.
  • Complete all clinical and professional records and documentation accurately and in a timely manner.
  • Work to create a positive work culture within cross-departmental teams.
  • Align work with other Hospital Medicine initiatives.
  • Perform other related duties incidental to the work described.
