About The Position

The Nurse Practitioner (NP) in Pediatric Gastroenterology & Pediatric Nephrology Services at the University of Michigan is responsible for providing high-quality inpatient care to pediatric and young adult patients with complex medical needs, including those undergoing liver and kidney transplants and dialysis. This role involves direct patient management, collaboration with multidisciplinary teams, and participation in quality improvement initiatives, all while ensuring patient and family education and support.

Requirements

  • Current licensure to practice as a Registered Nurse and Nurse Practitioner in Michigan.
  • Current specialty certification as a Pediatric Nurse Practitioner-Acute Care or Pediatric Nurse Practitioner-Primary Care with relevant experience.
  • Graduation from an accredited Nurse Practitioner program.
  • Certification as a Nurse Practitioner recognized by the National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN).
  • DEA license and AHA Approved BLS and PALS certifications.
  • Two years of clinical experience in pediatrics.

Nice To Haves

  • Acute Care PNP certification or enrollment in a Pediatric AC PNP program within 3 years of hire.
  • One year of nursing/clinical experience with pediatric gastroenterology patients.
  • One year of nursing/clinical experience with pediatric nephrology patients.
  • Demonstrated high level of critical thinking and medical knowledge.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

Responsibilities

  • Provide inpatient care to pediatric and young adult patients admitted on Pediatric Gastroenterology and Pediatric Nephrology services.
  • Perform histories and physical examinations, order and interpret diagnostic studies, and develop a plan of care.
  • Attend team-based rounds and process discharges.
  • Stabilize and transfer patients to Pediatric ICU when necessary.
  • Counsel, educate, and support patients and families as needed.
  • Collaborate with consulting services for multidisciplinary care.
  • Respond to calls from patients/families and care teams.
  • Contribute to department-specific quality improvement initiatives.
  • Engage in professional development and continuing education programs.
  • Triage calls from non-admitted patients or outside hospitals/emergency departments.
