About The Position

The Nurse Practitioner in the Critical Care (SICU) at the Department of Veterans Affairs will collaborate closely with surgical intensivists and other healthcare professionals to ensure continuity of patient care services. This role involves providing comprehensive care to critically ill patients, assisting in the education of medical trainees, and managing patient flow in the Surgical Intensive Care Unit (SICU) and Progressive Care Unit. The position requires a strong clinical background and the ability to work effectively in a high-pressure environment.

Requirements

  • A post-master's certificate or master's or doctoral degree as a Nurse Practitioner.
  • Active, current, full, and unrestricted APN license to practice as an NP in a state, territory, or commonwealth of the United States.
  • Full and current board certification in an area of clinical specialty from a recognized certifying body.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in a surgical intensive care unit or similar critical care environment.
  • Advanced certifications in critical care nursing or related fields.

Responsibilities

  • Provide effective care to patients using sound judgment in assessing, planning, implementing, documenting, and evaluating patient care.
  • Obtain thorough medical histories, perform comprehensive physical examinations, order appropriate diagnostic studies, and establish treatment plans.
  • Recognize complex patient care situations and make appropriate requests for assistance from the assigned physician.
  • Manage mechanical ventilation modalities and oxygen therapy, including weaning from mechanical ventilator support.
  • Assist in the placement and management of intravenous catheters, including PICC-line placement, and interpret data from invasive cardiopulmonary monitors.
  • Attend multi-disciplinary rounds, write progress notes, and facilitate diagnostic and therapeutic interventions.
  • Maintain Basic Life Support and Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support certifications.
  • Perform administrative duties related to the assignment.
  • Serve as a clinical preceptor for students and participate in clinical educational programs.
  • Communicate and collaborate effectively with facility staff and outside institutions.
